Time to stop talking about it, and start on it! A buddy of mine had a little jet boat, you know the ones with a jet ski set up, but in a little boat. Lots of fun!! But then I thought... A little gt-150 would be a great boat with a jet.. I had another gt I was going to fix up so I just needed a jet boat for a donor motor and drive.. Found one! It's a 94 four winns fling with a 115hp omc motor. Freshly rebuilt.. But the guy didn't want to pay his bill on the rebuild. So after 6 years my motor man said I could buy it if I paid for the parts used in the rebuild. Deal!
-
Should be an interesting project! Look forward to seeing this come together and how it works!
-
First step.. Cut the donor apart.. It actually came apart easy. They had the same rotten core that the glastrons do. :) Split it in half to get at the motor and drive. All the controls, stearing and gauges will be used again. The gt is a little smaller so everything should fit.
-
Next. Time to take the motor out and see how it all goes togather. I think this will work out good. Very simple set up.
-
Next. Time to split the gt.. But this is enough for this weekend.. By the way the gt is a 76 with no wood left in it that's good.
-
Great project! Thanks for bringing us along to watch. While you have that power package out of the donor, how much does it weigh and how will that compare to the weight of hanging a typical outboard on the transom?
-
Probably make for better weight balance as the engine is forward of the transom. Really a cool project, could really make for some neat changes to what was formally the splash well area. Maybe a small sun pad across the rear? or flip up engine cover? or maybe a mini CVX cover? Now to find a diverter that will work on that size jet............
-
COOL !
Is the motor just a V4 OMC outboard motor ?
The jet assembly just bolts to transom and motor sits on top ?
Large container on side of motor is the fuel tank ?
-
I don't think the balance will be a problem because the omc power head is the same power head on every other 115 Johnson or Evenrude the only diff is that it's on a jet instead of a outdrive and the boat is rated for a 90hp and that's the same block as the 115 so weight should be the same. It will sit about a foot farther up in the boat. The "tank" I think is a muffler or some kind of expansion tank the exhaust goes through it. As far as the splash well, I have a cover from a 16-ss that fits nice in that spot so that's the plan for motor cover. I'm trying to make it like the motor cover and rear of a 16-ss.
-
Nice project! I've only seen one GT150 with an inboard so far.
-
Split the gt today.. As soon as I took all the rub rail apart the top just lifted off. No good wood at all. Transom has only holding togather by about 3" of glass left and that popped off with one twist of a pry bar. Time now to cut out what is left of the floor, stringers and transom.
-
Looking good!
-
Is the gel still OK ?
Looks pretty good from pictures.
-
The gel is in good shape, that's what I look for when I'm going for a new project. Fiberglass in good shape with just the wood being bad. All the floor, stringers and transom is out. Wood still soaked after being in a garage for two years. I think I can salvage the bow framing and ski locker. now time clean it up and get it ready for the repower.
-
I thought closed cell foam was supposed to be water proof?.... HA! I cut out about 250 lbs. of water soaked foam from the jet hull. No wonder I couldn't lift it.. Now need to clean it up and get it ready for the swap.
-
Cleaned up the jet and cut it down to fit. Set it in place... This is going to work.. :) .. It fit like it was made to. Now I'm excited. ;D I think I have to call it a jet boat now..
-
looks like it was meant to be!
-
Will you be glassing in that section, or using it as a template? Curious how the drive mechanism attaches to it's original hull. Are there fasteners that come from the bottom?
-
The last 2 pictures show the drive in place. Now I will be glassing it into the rest of the hull. The drive is fastened to the original hull with bolts and sealer, the hull is very thick at that point and that's why I'm saving that and grafting it in about 6" on the transom and sides and about 2' in the front to keep the flat bottom for the jet.
-
I'm reserving judgement til I hear some numbers ...
-
Is there a name for that propulsion system? Seriously. Knew they made some jet drive OB motors. Ain't never seen one quite like that.
-
It's called a turbo jet. Not sure who makes it though.. They were installed on four winns boats from 92- 98 from what I've found so far. Came with a 90hp or 115hp omc power head, although the one I have looks to have a 130 power head with vro oil pump on them. That's what was on mine and failed causing the meltdown so I'm removing that and will just burn mixed gas. Speedo goes up to 50, so I'm hopeing something like that, but?? The gt is smaller and will be a lot lighter then the four winns, so it should be fun..
-
It'll be unique if nothing else.

Info on Four Winns Fling Jet boat
-
Thanks Greg, I don't know where you find all this stuff, I knew someone would find more than I could..
-
Was in the "zone" all day and forgot to take pictures of the new stringers.... Instead of just using a 1x6 stringer down the center and two 1x2 on the sides I made them out of a 2x6 and 2x2 they fit real nice in the channels and are all glassed in. Painted the down side and edges of the plywood with marine paint to seal them and now have to glass all the rest in..
-
Very interesting project!
What kind of set up is there for the exhaust?
-
The exhaust goes through that "tank" and then loops back down one of the big tubes you see in pict. Than through the get. How ever... I've not had any one explain to me why that other hose that is caped, is used for? It tee's off the exhaust, than is caped up high.

Floor all glassed in, ski locker back in, any bare wood sealed with marine paint.. not sure if the little gt can handle a fuel tank up front, but I had one and it fit nice so I'll give it a try. I can always use outboard tanks later.
-
The TurboJet is listed at 250 lbs. about the same weight as a 3 cyl. 60 - 75 HP Johnson / Evinrude motor.
Pretty sure other GT's have bow mounted fuel tanks with the heavier V4 90 - 115 Johnson / Evinrude motors.
-
Time to flip it over and start having fun on the down side... Now you can see how the jet fit into the hull. All edges within 1/4" so it should grind down, glass in and fill in nice.
-
Not sure how picky your going to be but I have some pretty long sanding blocks and a couple air files. If you wanted to borrow them.

Think I'd take Shawn up on that. And focus on the leading edge of your 'graft'. Gonna have to somehow blend the original 'keel' into the 'pad' on the pump?
-
Per the info Gregg posted the pad should extend at least 18" fwd of the intake. Looks like you're close?
-
Some interesting stuff in the info Gregg provided. Check out "Turbojet Boat Design Considerations" in particular.
-
Thanks for the offer Shawn, but I've been cutting corvettes apart and putting them back together for years so I have most everything I need. And the flat part before the intake is almost 23" so it should be good also.
-
Not sure if Tim, Makinwaves, has any photos of the tank we built for his gt. It is a cut down Larsen alum tank, and the filler is under the GT badge. Actually adds some decent balance. So I think you will be happy with a tank up front.
-
60% of the weight aft, 40% fwd. Per Turbo Jet.
-
Getting close.. A little more finish sanding, primer then paint.
-
Final sand, then prep the rest of the bottom for paint.
-
Looks good!
-
I'm so excited for the first test drive.

" I'm so excited for the first test drive. "
Same here ...
Going to be a long wait till summer ...
-
Maybe Bryan is as crazy as me and goes boating on Christmas or New Year (if the river is still open).
-
Our weather has been in the high 30's to low 50's the past few weeks.
It might hold out long enough for a test run ...
-
That really looks great Brian, I have heard rumors that there’s always open water Beneath the red wing dam

Well he'll need a wing man Joe ...
-
I'm getting pretty excited also, I think this will be a blast.. Got it ready for paint today.. With any luck I'll have some pictures of it tomorrow in color. And this is only the bottom.. I've still got a long way to go.. Hopefully by ice out it will be ready. ;)
-
Hey what color(s) it gonna be. Wasn't that a bicentennial model in the beginning?
-
I thought as long as nothing on this boat will be stock, why use stock colors.. So I used two of my first and favorite cars.. First was a 64 point. Grand Prix in white and the other was a 66 point executive in reaf turquoise. I used the same two tone design that glastron used with the swoosh. Turned out good, now need to wet sand and buff. Do the trailer, as long as it's off and then start on the top.
-
I like it!
-
Ambitious project. I hope you are done by the time my cv23 gets here. I'll need help shining her up. ;)
-
Flipped it over and put it back on the trailer. Motor in and all cables look good, I think it's a jet boat now.. But winter is coming this week and everyone wants there cars in the garage, :( so I think it's time to put it to bed for a while.. But that doesn't mean it won't come out on nice weekends to do some more. Still going to try to have it done for ice out..
-
Curious to know your "flip" method. I was just about to flip mine and inspect the bottom before final grinding. Hoping I can map the bottom to make a better cradle to help relax some of the hook. You have made fantastic progress, let's hope winter has plenty of mild days to get some work done.
-
To flip it, the first thing is to get 3 buddy's and a come-a-long of some sort.. Connect the hoist or come-a-long to one of the tow hooks on the transom and one buddy on the other, other two up front. Lift it with the hoist doing most of the work, then when it was high enough to flip let the other 3 corners with the buddy's do the flip with the hoist holding it up. Then lower it back down. The gt wasn't realy that heavy just awkward. I also put ropes on all the other hooks so we had some to use as handles.
-
When I flipped the 23 I needed a few more than 3. We just rolled it over on to some air mattresses & inner tubes then picked it up and carried it in.
However I dont think we needed as many as we had although it did make it easier.
-
I don't know if you've seen the pics but this one was for sale in FL a while ago:
-
It had the 3 liter:
-
Keen to see more photos of the progress!!
-
No progress lately, :-/ But with the last few days above 0 , hopefully soon. Still need the room for cars....
-
Still to cold for me to fiberglass , so it’s time for seats.. I’m going with the barrel seats that Shawn has done a couple times.. . thanks for the patterns Shawn.. and finding me the bendy plywood for the backs. Patterns worked good, very easy layout. cut backs, base’s and horse shoe’s. Glued and screwed the base and horse shoe together then put the backs on. Still need to sand and fiberglass the backs to the base’s and seal the rest.
-
I thought I’d like them deeper so I added 1 1/2” to the base to make them deeper... what do “ you all” think? the one on the right is like the ones Shawn did and the one on the lift has the added part to it. Also a picture of one of Shawn’s that’s done.

I actually tried the exact same thing when I as building the seats for my Intimidator. In the end I didn't like it and cut them off. That extra 1.5" is just like my '86 cvx18. It works fine in that boat but those seats have sliders. From what I remember it was because it was harder to get into the seat.

With 45 and sunny it’s still to cold to fiderglass but I thought I could at least put the two half’s together and see what has to be mocked up for clearance. It all looks good and now I can see what it will look like..will have to raise up the splash well and mate it to the cover, but I think it will work!
-
Looking good Brian can not to see her come spring.
-
Yep. Lookin good!

The engine cover seems to look right at home as though its a factory build. So what model is it proposed to be, the new GT SS Jet? Nice work overall, and completed rather quickly. Hope to see it in person this summer.
-
Very nice! I personally prefer the longer seats. Have them in the Intimidator, seating quality is much nicer than the old style buckets.
-
GT SS JET..? I like it.. but I think what I’m going to do is take the GT-150 emblems that are on the inside and change it to GT-JET , that way they will fit in the original emblems. My hole plan was to make it look like it was something that Glastron “could” have done. That’s why I’m trying to use all Glastron parts. Seats are at the upholstery shop now and I’m going with the short version. There just isn’t a lot of room in the boat. And they will only be on about 2” off the floor.
-
Yep, GT-JET in the OEM style? Perfect.
-

Like he said. That'd be purty cool.
-
Wow, ice out might actually happen this year.... time to get busy... Made the transom to fit he motor cover. Picked up another project... thanks river fox. Hopefully in the next couple weekends I’ll have it in paint..
-
It’s all in color... now time to put it all back together..
-
Very nice, cool subtle colors. Will look like factory made, tell folks it's a one only prototype.
-
Very COOL !
I like the color.
Making good progress.
-
Did you paint or gel it? Looks great!
-
In all my projects I’ve done over the years, cars and boats this is only the second time I’ve done paint myself. Maybe next time I’ll try gel.. still have ALOT to learn.
-
It’s looking pretty good now, just waiting on seats and interior...
-
Look'in good, can't wait to see it on the water!
-
Looks real nice!

This is a very cool project! It looks amazing so far! Great job
-
Very nice job and speedy too! Interested to hear how she runs out with the jet. Have been interested to do something kind of similar with my 79 16' Carlson, but have been wondering if a scag may be needed to make it track better with a jet, has that ever been a consideration for you?
-
That is a consern with me also.. however the hole plan was to make a play boat that handles and runs just like a jet ski. I want to be able to spin it around and “wash out” just like they do. The trick I think is to find the sweet spot in turning control and all around safety. I’ll find out the first time on the water. :) :) And yes I will be wearing a good life jacket :o
-
Yes safety is important. Maybe with the 115 hp jet drive it wont be too crazy with power and speed so might handle better to enjoy spinning out and things. My fantasy "roadkill" project has this strange jet drive driven by a 318 Chrysler v-8 so maybe even a detachable scag depending on how I use it might be the way to go because I think it will be very scary at times.
-
Not to discount your fine job on body work and paint. And the obvious novelty of the project.
I just think you're overestimating power and performance.
For example: CV23 with a good running small block I/O will keep pace with a CV23 big block jet drive.
To perform any breathtaking "acrobatics", I think yer gonna wish ya had a lot more HP.
-
Always a bit more hp to be had from the V4, but I'm curious to know how well it does as currently configured. I would guess it should perform in similiar fashion to the Fling it came from, but again, testing is everything.
-
GT150 is about 150 lbs. lighter then a Fling, which will do 40 to 42 mph.
Put her in the water and see what she'll do ... Take it from there ...
I think you should gut out an old 50 hp Merc or Johnson motor and mount it on the stern, with out the lower unit.
Would be cool to see the look on peoples faces ... LOL
-
Both the gt-150 and the fling are almost the same in size, so lm thinking it should perform the same as the fling did. But the GT-150 should be lighter and has a shallower draft which I’m hopeing will be the difference in proformance.. again it’s not a race boat, just... “hopefully” a play boat. and If it can keep up with blue that would be a bonus. And I could always mount a v-6 omc block on it ;)
-

Ya. 40 mph @5K. Mebbe. Sure you could beef that Xflow up a lil. But where are ya gonna find a impeller to match the mods?
Don't get me wrong. I love it. But for starters the crankshaft's pointed in the wrong direction ...
-
I could spin my CV-23 jet around in a circle just like the jet skis do. There was a guy showing off one day in a little seadoo jet boat. So I fired up mine and went and spun it around a few times.
-
Wow, I didn’t think the 23 would do it, however the 20 I had did it very well also.
-
A V6 would be cool … 150 -200 HP would get 50 mph or better.
A V6 block wouldn't bolt up to a pump with a V4 bolt pattern … Would it ?
Is there other impeller to choose from ?
-
:) ;) I have no idea, it’s just a thought. Don’t know how different the blocks bolt up to the outdrive. Aren’t the v-6 just 2 cylinders taller? GO
-
Have you been able to water test yet?
-
NO!!!! Waiting for my seats to get done!! He’s had them for 2 1/2 mo. >:( And I’m ready to fire him! But keeps saying he’ll have them done soon. Might have to try it without seats. Just a couple little things to finish. Hopefully before the end of the month.
-
ALMOST READY ! Everything is almost done, going to shop to get tuned and then splash next weekend.. I can hardly stand it !
-
Sure looks cool !
Hope it performs as good as it looks !
-
I have to say it may have been well worth the wait on your guy doing your seats. The colors look very cool and unique, well done. Also cant wait to see it in the water, hope you can get someone to help with photos and videos even. Jim.
-
Yes, the seats were worth the wait.. they turned out great. Look and fit just like I planed it.. ;)
-
ITS ALIVE!! Had it running last night and all looks good.. will have it in the water on Thursday and then the fun will start.. hopefully :)
-
Congrats on the first startup!
Looking forward to seeing your results!
-
Yes, the seats were worth the wait.. they turned out great. Look and fit just like I planed it.. ;)
Looks good! When's the splash?
-
What a blast!!!! Does everything I hoped it would. Acts just like a little jet ski . Spins around, runs out nice. not very fast, but fast enough. I’ll try to get some action shots and post. Jeff showed up and helped with adjusting the steering and got a ride. Thanks Jeff.
-
So .. About 40 mph … little less ?
-
Sweet! Glad it worked. Can't wait to see it in August!
-
Thats awesome!
-
Nicely done, and a quick turnaround as well. Hope to see it in August. Still kinda like the idea of a mock low power outboard motor to throw folks a curve ball, but it looks great as is.
-
So how do I load a video?
-
Upload to YouTube and link here …
I have mine on my "One Drive" ...
-
Alright.. let’s try this.. only tops out at 35 but still is a lot of fun!! https://youtu.be/ljQXRCb1l7o
-
Flingtron? Gt-Jet? Either way, looks and runs well!
-
Would guess 35 MPH would be about a 65 to 75 HP outboard motor on a GT.
What RPM ?
Maybe a Stainless Steel impellier ... Don't know anything about Jet's ...
-
I'm curious to know if pulling a tube, skier, or wakeboard is possible? From the video it appears to be a blast to run.
-
Very cool!
-
Love it!
-
That is awesome!
-
Awesome! The boat looks great and it's amazing how fast you accomplished this build, nice work!
-
The gt-jet is a lot of fun there is still some tweeking I have to do to it. I’m not sure it has enough power to pull a tube or anything like that, but you never know till you try.... as far as not taking long, I think it’s because the gt’s are not that very big and I’ve been planing this for a couple years and everything used fit with little or no mods. If anyone else out there has something like this in mind... go for it ! it is worth all the time. ;) :)
