Decided to spend Fathers Day wrenching. Last nights dip in Lake Elmo ended by being towed back to shore with a boat that wouldn't start. Overheating lead to vapor lock and an almost dead battery. Tore into the lower unit to investigate. Impeller is whole, but very stiff and mini cracks on the blades. Gonna order two kits tomorrow anyway. T-stat tested ok on the stove; opens at 160, fully open at 180. Need to verify it is the right one. Manual says 140/160 for my model and year.

Also look for clogged water passage ways in the inlet lower unit. Maybe a bunch of sand is restricting flow or something.

Since I've gone this far, I'm going all the way...
Engine comes out tomorrow night. Along with the water pump issues last night, after we were towed back to shore I pulled the plug for the ride home and 20-30 gals of water wanted back in the lake! Pam was numb with thinking we bought an anchor instead of a boat.
Needless to say, I knew there would be challenges and that this was not a turn key venture. I just didn't tell her when we bought it!
The shift boot exiting the gimbal ring has a gaping hole in it. Just gives me a good reason to refresh the engine compartment, my way.
Don't think we'll make Tonka next weekend. The plan is to be water ready by the 4th weekend. Still excited to hook up and meet people. Most of the interior will be done and the seat cushons back from the upholsterer this Tues.

A note for you and for anyone else buying those water pump kits - buy OEM from Mercury ONLY! I went through a big fiasco at the shop regarding a customer's boat constantly overheating at higher rpms but ran cool at idle and we replaced the impeller 3 times over the past year. We were going nuts trying to find out the problem. This last time we found the impeller vanes were spinning free of the brass hub to which they were supposed to be bonded to. So, at low rpm the impeller was supplying enough water to keep the engine cool but at higher rpm the shaft was turning but the rubber wasn't and the engine would get hot. The suspect impellers are of the SIERRA brand, stay away from them or you'll have trouble.

You are obviously not afraid to tear into stuff! I admire your ambition level. :)
You are pulling the entire engine? I am curious as to how people go about this without a ceiling mounted hoist. There is no way my engine hoist would go high enough. Maybe if the boat was on the ground.

Anything major like that, it's "pay me now or pay me later"! Aftermarket stuff may be "good enough" on some stuff, but there's no substitute for for O.E. quality be it Merc, OMC, or whomever.

Sound advice on the OEM stuff. I concur and will comply.
If you can jump up and 'hang' from your rafters, then a 10'4x4 spanned across 4-5 rafters, wether they are old school or trusses can EASILY handle a 4 banger hanging from a come- along.
Anyone is welcome to come to Cottage Grove tonite to watch/help!! Start by 6 pm. Out by 7.

As with ALL boating projects, plans have changed once again!
Bellows re-seal kit is about 2 bills and not immediately available. So, the engine doesn't come out tonite.
Erickson marine has all the water pump parts I need so I should get it back together and running tonite.
I'll silicone and patch the shift cable boot to get by this year. Plans are to pull the engine this winter anyway.
Our boat could be ready for the picnic on Tonka!!

was this today? after you rebuilt the carb? Still going on the st. croix this weekend?
Have you tried starting fluid when it won't fire? When mine did this I would have to crank it at full throttle for it to start.....Like is was flooded out.

Ross, his boat broke down and the boat that towed him had the tube...so they had to make a train.

We didn't know anyone.
The kids were being towed by the boat towing us. When they stopped to help, our boat in the middle seemed to be the best way to get everyone back To shore safely.
