Title: New MN Member
Post by: S2000 on January 26, 2018, 10:49:41 AM
Greetings,
I stumbled across this forum and thought it worthwhile to participate. I have owned a green 1974 GC CV16SS 140Hp Mercruiser since 1980 and reside near Nisswa MN. Those who boat in that area may have seen my boat on the Gull Lake chain. I also own a Malibu Response LX.

Wow! Very cool! Never thought I’d see her true twin. We will be on the whitefish lake chain for a week in June. Might to go over to gull lake for a day to meet up. Welcome!

Thanks Gregg for posting the photos - and thanks everyone for the nice comments. As I told Gregg in a email, the boat needs some TLC in a few areas to make it really nice, but for the most part, it is in pretty good shape and it runs fine.
 Last Fall I purchased a direct drive Malibu Response LX because we need room for additional people - hence the CV may go up for sale. We've owned the CV for 38 years and it will be hard to see it go. I've told my wife that if we sell it I hope I never see it on the Gull Lake Chain, but then, maybe it would be cool to see it again. Surprisingly, that boat draws a lot of attention, almost every time we take it out.

I was wondering the history on that machine, you definitely cared for it.  Once you let it go though you will NEVER find another one in that condition.  All of this clubs boats are used and not garage queens, so none of them are perfect.  Saying that, I believe you have a family heirloom there.  Think about it before selling.

Now, if you do sell, I think the Club members would appreciate a first go. Any one of this groups members would appreciate it as much as you do.

David,
The boat was purchased new from Waterloo Boat & Motor (no longer in business), Waterloo, IA. We acquired it in 1980 from the original owner after my dad purchased a lake home on the Gull Lake Chain in 1979. The purchase included all the original documentation, Glastron and Mercruiser owners manuals, and I still have most of the repair receipts that I've collected over the years. During the first few years the boat saw a lot of water activities. That, combined with the fact that the boat sat on a non-canopy Shorestation for the first couple of years, resulted in a deteriorated floor in the rear, which I replaced and re-glassed in the early '80s. That is why you see a center carpet seam cover in some of the photos. Not all of the carpet was replaced. The floor is still very solid but I ensure that it does not remain wet for very long. Also, sometime during the mid '80s the raw water pump impeller went bad resulting in a cracked cylinder wall. The engine was then sleeved and completely overhauled at that time. Come to find out that those Chevy/Mexican blocks were not of the best quailty castings and are extremely sensitive to abrupt temp changes. I don't believe that the temp gauge ever exceeded 190, but it evidently does not take much. I keep a very close watch on it now. The engine starts and runs great and it's been a number of years since the plugs and even the breaker points have been changed. As I told Gregg, there is some fading on the transom where the sun reflects off the water. The seat bases need to be recovered and there are a few other minor items that need TLC. That pretty much explains it all.

In regard to selling it: My daughter just purchased a lake home not far from us and she has much more garage space than she needs - hence I have a place to store and work on the CV - so I'm in no hurry to get rid of it. However, at my age, the accumulation and maintenance of more 'stuff' is becoming a much bigger issue than it once was. Know this. If I do decide to sell, this group will be the first to know about it, and I would feel really good knowing that it would be well cared for by whoever purchased it. If someone is really interested, I can always entertain offers.

Jason,
In regard to your visit to my area in June: I don't know if it will happen but how cool would that be to see two identical CV16SS's travelling together on the water. Talk about an attention getter.

Jeff;
Maddens is at the south end of the lake and since you will be staying there, 'Ernies' would be a good spot for you to boat to, also on the southern end of the lake. My first choice. They've got decent food, beverage of your choice, and most important, decent boat slips. It's a good place to relax outside, along the shoreline and people watch, boat watch, or whatever. We boat there a couple of times a year for something to do. On the north end of the lake there is Bar Harbor, a fancier dining spot, excellent boat parking, and outside seating. We very seldom go there because the food is too expensive for what it is. A bit further north of Bar Harbor is Zorbaz, basically a pizza place. We've only been there once and the boat parking really sucks. Just south of Ernies there is a sand bar that a lot of people hang out at, if you're into that sort of thing. Maddens is a nice place, especially if you are a golfer. Enjoy yourself!

Well, let me be the first to congratulate you on raising such a daughter that has extra garage/work space for dad.  :)
