Title: Trouble starting, ideas or thoughts?
Post by: dszczucinski on May 27, 2018, 08:13:05 PM
Hey all,

The C512 is back on the water but has been doing some weird stuff. It has had a little trouble starting, but only after driving it for a bit. We will go out tubing or skiing, then take a break for an hour or so, and when we go to start it back up, it takes a bit to get it going. Additionally and could be related, the engine runs great and at the right temp when driving, but when we shut it off it heats up to 170-180. I don’t think we have changed the impeller in a few years so it’s probably due. We just replaced  spark plugs and ignition coil.

Any thoughts?

My 140 is occasionally like that too. I haven’t noticed the temp increase after shutting it off though. Make sure your choke is adjusted properly. Should be fully open. My starting process for when warm is throttle slightly above idle, crank, if it doesn’t  start pretty quick I increase throttle till WOT then leave it there till she starts. Then back off back on throttle. If still nothing, give a pump or two. Still nothing.....starting fluid!

It almost seems as though pumping it makes it worse? If we are switching skiers or tubers it starts right back up. Only when we sit and chill for awhile, like 45 minutes or more does it struggle. Starting with the throttle open a bit seems to help.

Have you tried cracking open the fuel fill cap just to let more air in?

I have not but don’t see why it would hurt to try. What’s the reasoning behind the method?

Allows the fuel to be drawn up if there's a suction/venting issue on the tank...

My thought is that it floods out while sitting hot. Might be a slow draw of fuel over that hour. That’s why it’s hard starting and requires a full throttle start. After a long break like overnight the fuel has time to evaporate.

@Jason that’s kinda what I was thinking. Perhaps the heat is causing the draw, and the needle isn’t stopping the flow. I’ll look down the throttle body next time we shut it off to see if I can see fuel leaking into it from the float.

Sounds typical of a condition called "heat soak". Temp rises while sitting and boils off fuel.  This condition is well documented on the web, so take a look at some of those articles.  Now going out of my comfort zone a bit, the design of the cooling system and impeller should keep the block and manifold full of water, I wonder if the impeller is marginal, would it allow the water level in the manifold and block to drop causing both the heat rise and the fuel issue.

@Plugcheck, I appreciate the info! I was kinda leaning toward that possibility as well. We haven't had to change the impeller in a few years so it is probably time either way.

I just know that on my Metric, the vent line didn't vent very well, and I could occasionally hear the tank flexing in/out as it tried to draw up fuel.  By opening the fill cap just a little bit, it allowed it to draw up fuel much easier.

I even re-ran a new vent line and make sure it could vent properly...still flexing the tank on start up.  Cracked open the fill cap, no more issues.
