Title: Merc 898/228/260 water temp
Post by: Plugcheck on August 26, 2018, 01:58:27 PM
Something happened at the meet to the CVZ that has me somewhat confused.  After nearly getting swamped at the pit by a big river boat, the Z has a noticably louder exhaust note and has trouble holding an idle.  Was finally able last Wednesday to hook it to the hose and it definitely sounds different.  Pumps very little water out exhaust on port side at idle.  Pulled plugs and exhaust, didn't find anything unusual.  Checked timing, was way retarded.  The dizzy has a separate lock down to set timing inside, so it's not adjusted by moving the dizzy body.  This keeps the flat cap aligned.  The internal screw loosened up and allowed timing to retard.  Likely just a coincidence, but happy it happened at end of event.   So here is my question.  I run maybe 130 degrees, thermostat is 190, but appears to only dump in exhuast.  What kind of temps do the rest of you run?

Both of my sbc 350cuin run a 143degree thermostat and run at 160 all the time.

Made pretty much a high power run from Prescott to ti temp gauge did not move from 160.

Did the exhaust boot rip? Sometimes timing can do funny things with temp

My first thought was I lost the external rubber flapper on the thru hull exhaust, but that is not the case.  After diving a bit deeper, the issue is the distributor.  This is the odd part, the dizzy rotor is fully adjustable to allow timing to be set without turning the body of the dizzy.  Never seen such before, but considering the flat cap, it makes sense.  Anyway, the hold down clamp was loose, allowing the timing to retard.

Both my boats run 140. Can’t remember what kind of stats.

My CVX18 runs at 160.  Putz'n through a long no-wake zone, it will move toward 170

Granted ours are fords... but I believe they have a similar cooling configuration both the 1900 and the Bal Harbor Run around 140. I believe they both have 140° thermostat in them

Like Scott, mine was raising from 160 when idling through channels.  Mine was going higher, like 190 before I had a new impeller installed in the outdrive.  Now stays at 160 all the time.
