Hello All,
I'm finally neck deep in my restoration project I started back in the spring of 2016. It was much bigger than I thought it was and I had to make many decisions along the way; mostly about expense. Did I want to just partially restore this boat for an "era aged" family boat or take this on as a full blown restoration close to factory perfect.
Well it started out as the former with me sanding and wet sanding the finish to get rid of the splotches in the gel-coat/clear-coat. I went down and down and the splotches stayed. I found out they went all the way down to the metal flakes themselves. I worked on this finish part-time for three springs and early summers. I spent the warmer months on the lake in my other boat, a 1981 Baja 16ss.
Well this past summer I decided to bite the bullet and have the boat re-painted as close to original as I possibly could. The photos tell the partial story. Right now I am in the process of fixing a spongy spot in the floor, replacing the carpet, and putting the interior and odds and ends back on the boat. This is my winter project. I will post along as I go but wanted to start a new post. (I started a post back in 2016 but it died along the way.)
I definitely have plans for running this boat this summer with new carpet, new engine paint, and partial re-work of the upholstery, I will do a full interior restoration later since the cost is so high. I will post new pics as they are taken along the way.

I was wondering if applying clear gelcoat on top would "wet" the splotches out? Looks like the flake was in fair shape. In any case, it is progress, will you bring it to the meet in August?

Thanks for the reply. I had a spot tested with clear-coat and the splotches were still there although lighter. Wet-sanding and then possibly clear-coating was my original intent. It just din't work for this boat. The boat itself was in good shape except for about a one foot square of soft plywood where the walk through was. I didn't have much in it so I thought it was worth the expense of a restoration. I took it to a restoration guy for an evaluation and he said the top gel-coat was just ruined. It was consistently left out in the Texas sun.
So, I went another direction. We will see. It looks fabulous so far. Brand new metal-flake and 15 coats of clear gelcoat.
And, yes... I am planning to attend the meet in August. I will look for registration dates. I want to camp.

Three sets of seats with buttons is going to be expensive, but vinyl side deck trim is pretty easy to do yourself.

I found the flakes myself at Great Lakes Skipper. It's called "dark gold." I added some regular gold 1 to 3 to get the "pop" in the sunlight. It was almost a perfect match in the shade and oh so gorgeous in the sunlight. The paint shop took this project personally and did a great job. As for the interior ? Yes, I am told 28 to 38 hundred dollars. The estimate was for pics I sent and not seeing the boat. That is why the $1,000 difference. I am getting a couple more estimates but am ready to spend what I need to put this together right. I'm not sure if I want to even do the sides since I've never done upholstery. We'll see. Depends on the whole job estimates. It depends on the cost whether I have the interior done this year or put the seats back in and run it this year and have the seats done next year. We'll see.

You didn't say if wood is bad on your seats .. But check this out if they are.

John did a write up on side panel replacement. I did mine. Vinyl is wrapped around and stapled to wood trim piece, board is screwed to side of deck, vinyl is wrapped under deck and stapled to deck out of sight. Would save you few hours in labor.

I believe wood is all good since the boat was re-upholstered in 2011. Feels good. But, I won't know until I pull the current vinyl off and look. I will replace anything that is bad.
On another note, I just found out that the new hydraulic steering up grade (SeaStar) won't fit my 1979 Merc 175 Black Max. I have asked for help from manufacturer and am in the midst of back and forth e-mails. Question, if I can't get the SeasStar to work does anyone have a suggestion for steering upgrade for 79 merc black max? I think I may start a new post and ask the question. I should have asked the question first. My mechanic suggested the SeaStar.

Not sure if that's the same problem your having …
Ed has some problems with the Baystar (Up to 150 HP motor) also.
He has an older 115 HP Merc and had to make extensions for steering ram.
He's had boat out a few times now and works well.
