I'm surprised only by this not being a requirement before.  Probably rusty in my conversion, but 115 lbs thrust pretty much includes any gas/diesel engine over 2hp.

They were a requirement from ABYC just not an actual law before. It was first recommended in 2009 by ABYC

We should add these to all our boats. I've added one to the CV16 but not the CV23 yet.

I have one in my 23. It was on the newer throttle controls that I installed.

But they only work if you clip them on.....    I have one on the gt-Jet but not on the two 23’s or the ugly duck.. I will be putting one on the duck when it’s finished but I’m wondering if I’m going to have to put them on the 23’s with this new “law” or is it something you can run without getting into trouble. but then it’s like anytime your doing something stupid, just another excuse to get the sheriffs attention..

If you read the law...it requires "manufacturers, distributors and dealers” to install engine cutoff switches on new boats"...you're none of those.

I didn’t have one on the deck boat but I plan on having one on the timi, and clipping it on. Just like our life vests, not only are they in the boat, we wear’m

Throttle/control on my 1989 Mariner / Mercury outboard has it.
Also 1994 Johnson control box had one.
I've used it a few times.

Cutoff switches are a good idea. Conrad Schmidt got throw out of his Glastron Challenger at a high rate of speed.  I got throw out of a 11 foot Pabst racing runabout with a 22 HP Mercury upon hitting a wave at an angle. The boat continued on without me, passed by the swimming area, come back at me and stopped only because the gas tank turned upside down.

I have one on the CVX-16 but remember to clip it on only one half the time, and then forget to unclip it when moving around the boat.

I clip mine to my life jacket every time.

I am with you David, I always forget to unhook it when I want to move around the boat.

I believe most, if not all, of my outboard controllers had some form of cutoff safety switch integrated into them.  I cannot remember if the CVZ did when I acquired it, but I added one in the restoration.  Dont think the Timi came with one. Simple installation and a valuable component of the crafts safety systems.  Not sure why they are not more common.  I rarely have to test them, seems I trip it everytime I move around the boat.
