Does anyone know what the minimum outboard shaft length for a 1985 CVX 17 would be? I have an Outboard lined up with a 20" shaft length,but i see others for sale with a 25" shaft length.
Not sure what to do here...Do not want to spend the money on an outboard that won't work. Thanks

Somebody will correct me if I am wrong, but a 20" shaft is what you want.

20" is correct length.

20" is correct for most craft, 25" is for pontoons and very deep vee boats.

I know from pictures that the hull in question has a stepped transom allowing the OB to be raised on the transom like they do with Bass Boats. Most dealers raise the mount one hole or 3/4 " on a standard 20" transom. Can someone please verify this? The Cav plate needs to be flush or a little higher than the back of the hull. Don't get it too high for skiing or prop slip loss will be high.

I didn't think they did .. but looks like they do ..
Ross & Dane have CVX17's.
Ross's had a 115 HP Merc.
Dane has a 135 HP Merc.

Ok great Thank you so much Another question is how much hp is too much? Would a 2.5 merc EFI (200hp) be too much or should I go with a 150 Mariner?
I can get either engine very reasonably. Thanks

I would go with the 150 HP Mariner ..
Is it a Mariner Magnum ?

I would recommend the 150 over the 2.5. The 2.5 would be a better fit for a Sprint or Ski machine.

The Merc XR2 , XR4 & XR6's and the Mariner Mag's were the high performance versions of the 150 HP.
Maybe a few more HP and a smaller gear case, designed for bass boats and CVX17's
Would guess with some set up the 150 HP would do 60 to 65 mph.
The 200 HP might do 70 plus mph.
How fast do you want to go ?

Fast!!! But with fast may come complications.. You all know this boat... will i be i be pushing the edge of safety? will it delaminate or will the Transom tear off?
But in saying all this what will the steer-ability be with the 2.5 vs the 150. I want to enjoy the boat not just be a man with a rocket tied to him like the Coyote

There are guy's with 225 HP V6 Johnson on GT150's !
Ron has a 150 HO Evinrude on his CVX16, with some very nice transom/stringer up grades, which get low 70's.
His friend is doing a C500 with a 200 HP Merc.

Wow good read!! Thanks lots to consider here. I probably should go with the Mariner because of my age. Body 56, Mind 22. I'm learning very slowly not to trust mind ,cause mind says 2.5

Even with the 150 HP motor .. Make sure all wood and glass in transom and stringers are good.

C535 is same boat as the CVX17.

Don't get me wrong, I love going fast, sometimes with a measure of uncertainty of fate, but you must temper that bravado somewhat depending on your planned usage. If go fast, all the time, only you in the boat, is your plan, then Id look beyond 200hp. Taking family for watersports and cruising, I'd opt for an outboard more in line with the recommendations of the boat manufacturer, plus a bit of wiggle room. Another issue rarely discussed is insurance. What does your friendly insurance agent say about overpowering a boat beyond the manufacturers recommendations? I hung a V-6 175 HP Johnson on a CVX-16, and my American Family agent about lost his mind. I ran it anyway, needless to say, it was a handful. I didn't run it very long that way, only for some testing. Sold the boat with a 115 Force, really a lot nicer family craft in that trim. Still did upper 40's with the 115.
