Back in the water
« on: August 02, 2010, 07:33:36 PM »
I been wanting to see how the motor in the Scimitar is doing inside, with 108 hours on it,  so I pulled it out a few days ago, took it apart and it looked good, just been running a little rich, just a little carbon in the pistons, the valves were a little dark, but still brown, I put in a new set of rings and bearings, new gaskets, and I changed the carborator to a stock 600cfm Edlebrock, set the timing back a few degree's so I can run pump gas, 91 0ctane.  When I get the 87 octane I can just add a little Lucas octane booster and be just fine.

I took it out to the lake today and it run good, but the carb and timing down-size cost three miles per hour, but it still runs 68 by the gps, I Liked the 70's but it cost a bunch to mix the gas, and kinda a pain when we took it out of town, anyway, it's back in the water, and gettin ready for the trip

Ya should have had a dragster. Some guys could change motors between rounds. I never had to, but we changed plugs, and checked the valves between rounds.

no doubt OleRed is the master... anyone who hasn't seen his transom modification on the "Almighty Scimitar" (my nickname for it) should really check it out. spinning wrenches isn't his only talent.

still blows my mind that he is making over 400hp thru a 600cfm carb. I never would have thought it would flow enough for a wide open throttle marine engine. and anyone who thinks Alpha drives don't hold up under high hp or hard acceleration... here's your proof!

Red, any shavings in the outdrive?

Thanks Guy's, but I don't think I'm a master, the only reason I have so much experience working on these boats is because everything I've done to them, it seems like I've had to do two or three times sometime or another, to get it right ..  :-[

Steve, I had this drive built with 1.47 ratio gears, he set the drive up with .004 tolerance, and it made a little noise, I changed the lube after about 8 hours, there was metalic evidence, but the builder said that was not uncommon for a re-build. I change the lube again at 50 hours, it was dark, but not metalic, and I changed it again at 100 hrs and looked just fine, I use the Mercruiser high performance lube.  I am getting a little wear in the lower gear set, the prop shaft has about 1/8" end play, and I know it's ready for some attention, but I think it will make this trip alright.

I took it back out to the lake this evening,  met up with a friend that has a pretty new Profile .. Beautiful boat,  has a blown 610 big block, and yes,  I took it easy on him,  his boat weighs over 10,000, but it does real good, about 65mph, and sounds like it is running about 90. I'll post a video of him in a bit.

The prop I'm running is a PowerTech 14 1/4 X 23 pitch,  at least thats what it was when I got it, it has been to the lab three times since, it has been cut on, curled, sharpened and twisted to the point that I don't even think the prop master knows what it really is now, but it has a Lot of lift, and when the thing gets on top of the water it really shows off, but it don't have much low end performance, it don't become efficient till about 40 / 45mph, and you can really tell when it stops slipping, it goes from 45 to 65 in about 4 seconds.

Cool Red, can't wait to see your boat at the meet. 68 MPH is still kick'in butt - especially in the comfort of a Scimitar!  8)
