Gonna Smash a Minivan
« on: August 09, 2010, 10:00:06 PM »
Most of you know I run a couple demolition derbies every year at the Dakota County fair. This year I will be wrecking a 1984 Ford Escort on Wednesday and a 1988 Chevrolet Astro Van on Saturday. Last year I took first with a 1986 Plymouth Voyager. We'll see what happens this year. If you would like to route me on I am #23 in both cars. Look for the head on the roof! Show starts at 7:30pm at the Dakota county fair grounds in Farmington.

Jason do you need to get tickets ahead of time or can you just show up? I've been wanting to take my oldest to one of these for awhile, I think he'd get kick out of it. Dad to of course. ;D

Nice trophy BTW! 8)

Here I'm thinking...huh...that Escort would make a nice first beater car for my son.

When Jason is done with it it will be a VERY beat beater car!  You would not have to worry about parking it in crowded lots!

You can not buy tickets (unless they changed it) ahead of time. Saturday's usually fill up so get there early. Or you can watch from the pits for $5 more but no one under 16 can get in there. I have not met one kid or adult that has not loved watching it.

The Escort was a nice car. Sometimes you feel bad wrecking a decent car. At least I parted it out and made another WI guy very happy that is resoring one of these beauties.

No bets there .... !   :-/ But I bet the roof mounted head survives the carnage!  ;D

I was gonna say...dude that Escort looks clean! Especially for what it is...those piles are typically rusted beyond recognition. At least you helped another guy out; even though they made a billion of Escorts I bet good parts are hard to come by. But then again...he's restoring an Escort?? ???

In any case I envy you - I've wanted to compete in a demo derby since I was a kid. Good luck and have fun...

Ya I'd say go ahead & crunch the Astro van. But destroying that Escort just doesn't seem right. We had a white wagon with a 5 speed that was cool as hell. Think we hauled a log cabin kit in/on it once ...

'Member a buddy o mines brother had a "GT" 2dr hatchback. Don't laugh, that thing hauled a**! I am not kidding. Turbocharged 2.3, stiffer springs & sway bars. 'Course his was tweaked a lil bit but boy that thing ran like a scalded cat!

I bought it for $75. Guy thought the tranny was bad because it only had 1st and Reverse. Turned out the kick down lever was disconnected. Nothing else wrong with it. Thought about keeping it and driving it as a commuter but derbies are more fun. Basically every interior part and the doors, hood, tailgate, bumpers all went the restoration guy and he gave me his "not as nice stuff".

Ready to go! We'll see how she looks in 24 hours!

Thanks for coing Sean! Would have been better if the track wasn't so bad. All the rain made sink holes. Took 5th and $100 though.

Ha ha! Thought it was something like that.

Nah Jas, I'd never try to steal a girl from a fellow Glastron owner. Now if you were a Bayliner owner ...?

That van actually held up pretty well. Its still square! Another trophy for you and Harriet the Head to be proud of. What about the "scort"?
Looks lovely on the front lawn btw.
Is that a special class with a van or were you bashing cars?
Tires all held up? Amazing.
I would have been a bit creeped out about the engine being so close.

That thing have a 360?  Looking for a drivetrain for the 48.  I bet the Merc would hold up real well.
