CVX 16 way down in Louisiana
« on: August 28, 2010, 07:47:43 AM »
I'm officially in the Glastron club now with my purchase on Thursday.  Drove 3 hours after work on Thursday from Baton Rouge, LA to Vicksburg, MS to get a very nice and solid 1977 CVX 16. Hull is in excellent condition considering it's 33 years old. It has it's share of nicks and scuffs here and there but those will be taken care of this winter when I'm not on the water.  Best thing is EVERYTHING is on the boat that came with the boat. All trim, all hardware.

It's on a very strong Shoreline trailer in very good condition and has a 1977 Evinrude 115 that runs like a gazelle. Compression is spot on and under the cowl looks like the day it came off the production line. Transom is rock solid. The interior needs to be replaced but that will be a project in October when I'm off for a week.

Did a little wet sanding this morning as it started to rain. It better clear up as I want to take it out on the water. It was a two owner boat before I purchased it. I purchased from the original owner who bought it back from the 2nd owner after 21 years. Always garaged when not in use so there's not much fade on the topside. A little wet sand and a good buffing will liven it up a bit. Plan to have the gel coat reapplied later.

Will send pics as soon as it stops raining. It's the orange and white scheme. Looks like the one docked at the 2010 meet with the Merc on the back.

Two questions for everyone here.  Where can I obtain a flag that goes in the bow light fixture and does anyone have a center bow vent they'd like to get rid of? Mine has a couple of missing pieces. OK. One more. Source for carpet and vinyl to match as close as possible for the interior?

Yet another project to keep me up late every night. It's worth it.

Marc

Welcome Marc !
Can't remember any one having trouble finding the orange vinyl for seats, so you might be able to match at a local vender.
I know people have had problems find the carpet, but have found so thats close.
eBay would be a good start for a stern flag or go to http://www.cafepress.com/ and make your own design.
Others have Cafepress stores set up and might have flags in stock, Chris's store seems to be gone ...
Looking forward to pictures of your CVX !

My "store" as it is, is still up.

If anyone wants shirts made up with their boat on them just let me know.

I do not know of a flag they offer though.  That is a great idea though.  I will have to look for a place to make custom flags and maybe we can fly our own CGOAMN colors next year!

I never have been able to get them searchable on Cafe Press for some reason. Anyhow... they are still available and I will gladly make up custom shirts like those for Mark with his old GT-150 on it.  Shirts, Mugs, bags, what ever you want that Cafe Press offers.

do you mean this bow vent?  Replacements were available at www.classicglastron.com  click on general discussion, then parts - available for sale, then "aluminum horn grill cover".  A guy had some made and was selling them.

Jason, I believe Jimmy said he ordered the pennant flag off of eBay...  see link to adverstisement below.  Available in mult colors, but the flag in the advertisement does not have the grommets on it, assuming they will put those on if requested or maybe it's standard.  I would ask to be sure.

Can't wait to see pics Marc... that Orange and White combo is one of my favorites!

Mark,
Looks like you get a little better price ordering the flag directly from the seller instead of going through ebay.  www.vintageboatsupply.com  When ordering you specify if you want grommets.  Flag is available in many colors.  I'm thinking about getting one in orange, of course !!!!!!  Brian

No they had the old Glastron script, and the word "Classic" on the bottom.
Brian gave some away. I tried to buy one from a winner but couldn't.

Took it out for the maiden voyage Saturday evening.  Rain kept popping up here and there until about 6 pm. I'm only 15 minutes from the launch so I headed over and did about 25 miles of riding. Motor needs a tune up. A little rough during slow to medium acceleration. I moved over my prop from a 1996 Evinrude 88 SPL to the 115 on the CVX as it was a bit bigger. (13 3/8 x 17)  WOT was 5800 and from my time over distance calculations with a stop watch I figured about 45 mph. Speedo read 39 - 40 but I know that it was much faster than my previous boat from the times I was getting. I'd like to step up to a (13 1/2 x 18 or 20) OMC Raker.  I've seen this prop do wonders on a couple of 16 ft bass boats with a 112/115 Johnson. Boat topped out at 60 GPS and that hull was about 325 lbs heavier.

Someone was looking over me though as I stopped the engine once on my last 5 miles back to the launch and it started fine. When I returned to the launch and shut it down to back the trailer in, that was it, battery gone. I've perfected trailer a boat by paddle in under 5 minutes. Then, once I got it in the parking area I had to disconnect my car and hook the jumper cables to the boat so I could raise the motor for the trip home.

All in a day's fun.

Thanks for all the info on the horn vent and the flags.  My original questions was about the bow light. I have the original Perko bow light and it has a hole where you can mount a flag pole.  I'll have to call Perko Monday and see if the item is available. They sell a new product that is a retro style metal bodied bow light that has this flag pole mount as well.

I'm shopping for carpet this morning. That old nasty Astroturf has to go.

Do a " Orange carpet " search on CGOA  ...  http://www.classicglastron.com/phpbb/index.php

http://www.classicglastron.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=2261&p=14800&hilit=orange+carpet#p14800

I think your max rpm's range is 5000 to 5500 on your V4.
Check Craigslist and eBay for cheap 19P to 21P props.
You should get at least low 50's out of your boat/motor.
Dave, Doug, Brian and Terry should post with info ...
