Basic Question - What Type of Outdrive do I have?
« on: September 15, 2010, 01:08:13 PM »
Ok...so I've only every heard it referred to as a 'Pre-Alpha'.  When I went to order the transom seal gasket, there are a lot of models apparently (MC-1, R, MR, Alpha 1, Alpha 1-GenII, etc).

Now...I know mine's not an Alpha.  Mercruiser (according to the online exploded parts view at my local dealer) has done away with the gasket ring for my model and gone to a flat gasket that covers most of the outdrive.

On the one hand that's probably not all bad right, but that's assuming my 30 year old gimbal housing is still flat & level, etc.

I can't find anything really that identifies it besides the 898...is that really the entire power plant & drive model number?  I mean, the outdrive even is stickered as an '898'.

There is a serial number stamped here on my drive .. yours is a newer drive than mine though.  There is a number stamped somewhere that will identify what it is.  RICH!!!
.. it is what it is ... and that is how it should be!

I probably should have worded my thread title better...

The gasket that I ordered today is the gasket for the transom bracket (gimbal housing, trim rams, etc, etc) to mount to the transom...not mounting the outdrive to the gimbal housing.

I'm being told that it has changed from the old round gasket that fit into the groove to a flat gasket.  I'm concerned that that new void could be an issue.

This is the gasket I'm replacing...sorry for the confusion guys:

I'm not sure where you heard that the round ring type gasket isn't available anymore, all the transom assemblies used it since 1973. It's the ones prior to 1973 that used a flat gasket. Is far as know the round gasket should still be available from Mercury.

Guy at the parts counter...his abilities scare me each & every time, the 'good' guy is on vacation.  I ordered the one Grinder & I found online.  It'll be here on Friday.

The 'good' guy knows all about Glastron Carlson's, used to work on them in the 70's & 80's, so trying to develop a good relationship with him.

He also knows the old Johnson 235 really well, so he's going to look at tuning it up and get it purring like it should be.

Here's a trick for you for installing that gasket: use contact cement. Brush some in the groove of the transom assembly, and a light coat on one side of the gasket and let it sit about 10 minutes. When they become tacky start pressing it into the groove at the top and bottom and work your way outward to the sides while trying to keep the tension equal all the way around. Put the splice of the gasket where the two ends are joined together at the top.

Isn't the gasket one piece?  I've also read that you can take a rubber 'rope' and yeah, cut it to fit with the splice at the top (sealed of course).

The gasket is one piece but is made as a straight piece of foam rubber, cut to length and glued together to form a ring.

Doran,

Can you look at the gimbel housing and let me know how hard it looks to replace that trim hose? I have to replace mine and just wonering if I have to pull the housing? I heard there is a block that you can pull off the bottom and the hose is hooked to that.  ???

Thanks
Shaun

Sure Shaun.  It won't be going on for a few days...waiting on the gasket.  If you haven't heard from me in a day or 2, shoot me a pm to remind me.

Really not that hard and you do NOT need to pull the gimble housing off to get to those hoses. There is a juction block on the bottom side you remove with 2 bolts then pull it down. Then you can remove the 6 hoses which connect to it. I replaced all of my hoses a couple years ago.

Actually Shaun Jason is wrong about that. The only way to fix that line is to pull that 305 and replace it with a 350! That's what I'd tell the spouse anyways! ;D

Maybe in a year or two. That 305 dosen't run to bad I had the GPS with me last weekend and got 57.7 @4700 with 1/2 tank of gas and choppy water. Also the lake I was on is only about 3/4 mile long.
