Anyone have good ideals for engine stands
« on: November 16, 2010, 07:51:21 PM »
The boats winterized but I have been holding off on storing.   I drove to the Mississippi and asked a fisherman with a large bass boat about the water.  He confirmed what all you experienced boaters know.  It is easy to steer around the big floating trees, but his sonar shows a lot of big trees waterlogged moving just under the surface.  So the boating is done for me this year.
The boat has a good cover and is on a new 12 foot by 30 foot pad.  I hope to put a 12 foot wide snow rated storage tent over it also.

Dose any one care to share some different or useful designs for engine stands.  I like my motors in my heated shop.
Plywood designs on the wall would work.
Plywood on casters would work.
Metal tube is good.  I love to weld.
My automotive engine stands work, and I have run the boat engines on muffs that way.
Just wondering what other creative members have come up with???

Good winter to all

Cant beat that one!
I have one made of 2x6's and I put it on top of a homemade furniture dolly but then I had to clamp the stand to the dolly so skip that and build the one Gregg has shown, I'd say.

Thanks
Nice: useful and inexpensive, and saved me all the time of trial and error.
That?s why I asked (can?t beat experience).

Hmmm ... kind of the same as the one I put together using plywood and 2X's for my outdrive.

.. it is what it is ... and that is how it should be!

LOL!
Yeah Mark, I think Laines motor would turn that to tooth picks.

My dad always had something like this to hang his outboard. but it was a 9.9 horse. If you build it strong enough it will work.

I have a couple of these. They hold 3 motors, or two to work on.  It's an old waterbed.

I obviously copied and pasted and edited Greggs Plans.  Thinking of the wall mount.
Good thought ?If you build it strong enough it will work?
Now I am happy, angle iron, plate iron, a few lag bolts, and I get to use my welder.

Thanks
Jerry
But I left my water bed in an old chicken cope I rented and lived in 35 years ago.  I loved that heated waterbed because all I had for heat was the wood stove.

i used a new 1000lb furniture dolly,20 bucks ay harbor freight for this one,i have a wider one i just made, and i am going to make a very wide one for 3 motors for my father in law, just make sure it will fit through whatever door you have when you build it.in the ic is the one with the harbor freight dolly ,its holding a 63 evirude starflite v on it,i threw it to gether in about 30 minutes, before the motor even got to me,so i didnt know how high to build it,i gave it a 5 degree tilt back, and 10 will work,15 degrees is too much.

I purchased furniture dollies at my local menards....inexpensive 2x4's ...and basically built same style as listed here.....the wheels alone are usually $10 a piece...a dolly is like $20.
I have 2 stands for working/test running, I have one that I can hang 3-4 motors on, and another that can holds 2.....all with wheels ....very handy to move around the shop when need too....

good luck.

I am more impressed by your fold away work bench. Very nice!

thanks guys, heres pics of the foldaway tables, the cuts are at 45 degrees, and the bottom support is ripped at 45 dgrees and screwed into as many studs as possible, when lifted up the legs fold right into it,i layed awake at night trying to come up with the best idea i could, heck its 5:19 am now.
plus everything in my garage that i could,i put castors on them,i also built a 4x8 table that the legs fold up and it hoists into the rafters, with an elecrtic hoist.when your garage is only 14x 24 you have to find the extra room, lol, for a boat, john

I built the one Hyperacme posted and it works perfect for my extra motor. I have a '96 model 88 SPL hanging on it and I also mounted the control box to the stand. I can roll it in and out of my workshop, hook up the hose and run it every couple of weeks and put it back inside.  When I built my house I had the plumber install a hot water faucet next to the standard faucet for various projects and with a Y hose I can run the motor in the winter months with 80 degree water. Once I'm done I can roll it in to my shop that stays around 68 when it's down in the 30's outside.

You can build this stand for under $50 including the casters.

Motors with the BIA bolt pattern will work great on a standard automotive engine stand, Got one of my Inline 6 on one.

You must have a very tall engine stand.
