I have used my auto engine stand.  I rolled it next to my boat hocked up the controls and ran is on muffs.  You?re RIGHT old enging stands are taller.  My skeg hit one side of the three leg stand, but cleared the ground.  The three leg stand is a little tippy.  I looked at the new four leg/wheel models and the new three leg models, and they are all made short.  My bout motor would not work on a new auto engine stand.  I am also thinking of a way to use my engine hoist with a bolt on attachment that would hold the boat motor.  The engine hoist is vary stabile ,and the one tool would do double duty, lift the engine off the boat and be a stable work stand, and still fold and roll out of the way.

The height could be problem for the 25 inch shaft motors but on the 20 inchers the those stands work great I think. Multiple use's, ez to move around, and dont take up much space.

I have 3 of those big stands (ya they're all full) They are all made with used lumber and heavy duty casters.  They don't tip, or shake. I can set my battery, and gas tank on them and roll them up to the tank and run the motor. It's just not a place to cut corners, and you don't have to spend mutch to build one.

This is how a metal outboard stand might be put together. This one is over $1,000 but has all the bells and whistles. Craig at work offered to build a metal one for me and asked for some plans.

I have a good friend up there in Pensylvania now, but when he lived here he built this one for me to hold a couple 150hp Merc's .. he's a Great motor stand builder, all screwed and glued together, worked just fine.
