old motor new find
« on: December 10, 2010, 10:23:02 PM »

E/J 1959 50514 E4 Four Fifty Starflite 50hp.  Beautiful motor lots of chrome and plastic badges.  Boat is a Larson 14 foot believe 1959 playboy, trailer looks correct from the brochures I can find on internet.  Trying to find title, last licensed MN 1995.
Starting research, motor, boat Model? Value?

Does anyone know about this old motor?

Will try to post photos.
Not a Glaston but if correct motor, boat, and trailer.  Cool is cool.
Do not know if motor runs (yet).  Left free at friends rental property.   Renter did note want.
Need to find titled owner.
Need to ID boat.
Need to see if cool old motor runs.

The "Fat Fifty" was the first of the V4s from OMC.  When they went to more horsepower they changed blocks and lower units. I wouldn't put much money in it. You're better off with a '60 75HP and the 50 hood so it looks right.

Thanks
Jerry, my friend offered me the boat and trailer, free if I want it, and of course I do, if I can get a clear title.  He was hoping the old motor had some value.  I will still see if it runs, photograph and post on some other web-sites.  He hoops to make some money selling the motor.  I will try to get him an honest value.

Changing the hood to a larger motor sounds like an old hot ?rod tip, and I would guess the newer motor may be more dependable and easier to find parts.  Thanks I like it, that?s why I asked.

So if it runs, I need to find the right collector.
If it does not run the cover has some value.
The Larson Playboy was not power rated in 1959 so my 85 hp may have found a new home.
In the early 1960?s the haul was rated to 70 hp.
If no one offers money for the motor. I may keep it, I do like that classic look of the chrome cover.

Normally if it doesn't run the coil on the mag is bad.  I should have one.  Let me know what you find.

Anyone have good or dad experiences with trying to title and license old found boats.
No throwing furniture!
No cursing or swearing!
Any other advice?

I can not speak with authority on the subject, but, the folks at the license bureau here in Waseca mentioned to me a year ago when I was there on related duty that titles for boats are relatively "new".  Many times if the boat is old enough(I believe a 1959 would be)all that is required is a bill of sale from the previous owner.

For something nearly as old as me it sure is pretty!

Looks a bit different then the brochure. Bow light location, cleats etc. Maybe a year off one way or the other? Seating looks right. Cool rig regardless. Interesting position for the winch.
That is one sinister looking hood. Keep me posted if you decide to take Jerry's advice and swap blocks. That might be the same as my Johnson? But as Jerry said, that may not be worth the effort on my part.

Update:
1.    The boat was left at a large state rent subcidised apartment complex, 200 to 300 units.  The renter pays what they can, a small percent of their income.  He verbally told the apartment manager he did not want the boat and left it in his garage and moved.  If I find the person?s name, finding him could be hard!  It is possible he legally owned the boat and knew he would never have the money to restore it.  It is also possible he got the boat from the previous owner and never had clear title.  The haul has MN 94 decal and registration numbers on it.  The 94 sticker has on it 1958, Larson, 14 foot.

A 1958
B  Farm owner with physical possession would sign a bill of sale and take the time to get the abandoned title paperwork if necessary.
C  The renter that left it at the apartment could be hard to find and may or may not have been the titled owner.
D  I expect the local (DMV) to be unfriendly and not give me the name of the person with the 94 stickers and last legal title.  MN especially my local DMV are not friendly/ helpful/ or even the slightest bit professional.  They also do not know what they are doing.  The paperwork they do fill out is always rejected by the state.  I get more and more paperwork, past experience.

The motor is a 1959 by checking the serial numbers.  I found empty parts box?s and receipts from a local mechanic, a friend of mine, I am sure it ran and was maintained by the best at one time.  Empty water pump impeller box, silicon seal lower unit, gaskets not available.  Right head has been bead blasted and has a newer gasket, clean engine, greased linkages, sprayed black rubber on electrical connections, all signs my friend maintained that motor at one time.

Thanks for the website and local contact.

Thanks that old boat is cool and the motor is cool.  Haul is solid, floor is gone, transom is solid, stringers in front of boat are rotted; stringers from middle boat back are solid.  Definitely worthy of restoring and.  I want to practice restoring (wood, glass, gel coat) this boat because eventually the Glastron will need some work.

The photos do not show the chrome well but that hood is cool, even if it had to be custom cut to enlarge the height and or width to fit a newer engine.

Thanks it is a cool motor.  I cannot wait to see if it runs.  Unfortunately it is in an out building and it would be a full day with the tractor moving snow to get to it.  For now I am going to fill it with sea foam, and work on getting the title.  Would love to get it in my heated shop and see if it runs and start the restoration.  Hopefully before spring.

Laine,

A MN title was never required for that boat. The bill of sale is all you need to register the boat in your name. The trailer is a different animal. Trailer registration is through the MN DMV and they require more documentation. If you can get the previous regisitered owner of the trailer to sign a bill of sale, you can then transfer, otherwise the easiest route is to register the trailer as a home built.

The boat looks more like a Pla-Mate to me.

The motor looks like it has a powerhead from a 1958 manual start Johnson 50. I'm pretty sure the "super Sea Horse" was painted white, and the "Sea Horse" was painted holiday bronze. Or it was simply repainted with Johnson paint.

On your Glastron/Carlson DVD is a Larson folder with brochures from 1955 on.

Ross, you're probably going to need a notarized bill of sale at the very least to get it registered.

You don't need a notarized bill of sale in MN
