There are adapter harnesses available that will allow you to connect an older red-plug cable up to a '96 and newer OMC/BRP engine but it would be better to go with all new wiring harness and system check system.

Joe,

good info!

assuming the '98 115 was in good shape, looks like the older 140 out performed it easily.

according to your speeds, it would appear your "used" '77 must have been a little tired, as that and the '84 should have both been crank rated hp.

again, a good comparison. good info for people who are comparitive shopping for different reasons... speed, fuel economy, dependability, etc.

Yes, the 1977 was tired; it was only on the boat a couple of years.  I was under the impression that they changed the rating to the prop around 1980, I had a friend who had a 1980 CVX 16 with a 1980 Johnson 140 and both boats ran the same speed.

I use to have access to a cabin on a small lake in Nebraska it was almost a mile long, just about the time you would get it to 60 you would have to turn around, a couple time a year both Carlson raced a few laps, it was always a tossup...

When I purchased my 115, I looked a long time for a clean 140 but they are hard to find.

Now that I've thought about it after being on the water the results really aren't bad considering the 88 was running 500 rpm less with the prop from the 115. I'm guessing that another 500 would have added about 2 - 3 mph so it would have been darn close. You know how men can be. Never satisfied even if it's just a few mph difference.  All I know is the 88 is much quieter and should be way better on fuel.

I did go back to the launch and checked the throttle cable and it was topping out the carbs.

Unless I run across a really nice 120, 130, 135 or 140 I'll just keep the set-up I have. I know what each motor will do and it will only take me about 1 hour to swap out the motors now that I have the wiring set up to accept either motor. I have a lower pitch prop that I'll use for water sports and then use the 21 for running the river. I keep the spare in the boat and I can just back it up to one of the sand bars and swap it out if need be.

Thanks for all the info from all the other members. We all can use the knowledge.

I figgered you'd take a substantial hit on top end. But as you correctly say if you got the revs up some you'd probably gain a few mph. And not that you'd want to but you could stick the 115 carbs on the 88 for more hp. Monkey with the timing, raise the motor, etc.

If it were me I'd put some new pistons & rings in the 115, bore if necessary. Scrounge up a 140 'bubble butt' exhaust tuner & you'd be good to go. Fast. Mebbe update the paint & graphics while yer at it. As they say "There's no replacement for displacement".

Why doncha run down here to Dunedin & pick up that free GT 150. (Trailer $200) That'd be a nice place to hang the 88. Well you would have to rebuild the boat first ...

Good luck finding a 140. From my experience it's akin to trying to find the Holy Grail. Somebody posted an '89 here on Clist a few days ago. Fresh top end, Bobs nosecone & low water pickup. $1000 bucks OBO. Gone before I could check my bank balance ...  Seriously! The problem is people just run & run & run em til there's nothing left.

I have some repairs to do to the 115, mostly cosmetic. There is a 3 inch hairline crack in the cavitation plate and a couple of little broken areas that need welding. Two notches about the size of half a nickle. Once I get that done I'll touch up the paint and decide what to do in the spring.

There is a boat yard in the New Orleans area that has a grave yard of motors. At least 150 motors of all makes, models and years.  I'll have to find out exactly what it would take to up the 115 to a 140 and how much I'm looking at including the piston work.  Don't know if I want to drop $800 - $1000 in parts and whatever in the 115 when I could sell that motor for $1500, put the upgrade money with that and then sell the 88 for about $2500 and then locate a newer 115, 120 or 130.

For now I'm good and just going to concentrate on getting the interior finished and then the wiring. Santa brought me a Blue Seas 12 spot fuse box with positive and negative bus bars. I'm going to emliminate the miles of wiring in the boat and make it neat. That way I'll only have 2 pairs of wires on the battery instead of the 5 pairs on there now.

I do bicycle work on the side (I road race and do charity rides) and I have 5 customers this week. People are getting ready to train for the 2011 race and triathlon season and need repairs. That'll all be boat money.
