2012 CGOA "Run on Rathbun" - June 1-3
« on: September 01, 2011, 05:33:23 PM »
OK, guys ...

Honey Creek Resort at Lake Rathbun has indicated they will work up reduced rates for their facilities the weekend after Memorial Day.  They typically have a big Golf Tournament that weekend and did not seem willing to reduce the rates then ... Typically, Honey Creek requires a contract for groups - I've managed to negotiate this event out of the required contract, the downside is it becomes a first-come-first-served situation ... they will honor the agreed on reduced rate for participants as long as accommodations remain available.

Honey Creek Resort has hotel rooms, cottages & RV facilities.  There is no tent-style camping available on the resort facility - but can be available at the adjacent state park (Honey Creek State Park).

As a general idea, so that I can move forward, how many of you would be interested in the RV facilities?  How many for the Cottages (example:  The one bedroom loft cottage has a queen bed in the bedroom, a full/twin bunk bed and an individual twin bed in the loft area - one has been requested by a CGOA member already ... the 4 bedroom cottage has two queen bedrooms & two bedrooms with the full/twin bunk & individual twin set up ... you guys who know each other can get together and split the costs)  Anyone interested in staying in the hotel proper?  The hotel has a small indoor "waterpark" for the kids.

There is a restaurant and bar on premise and I have asked for free appetizer/half-priced adult beverage coupons to participants.

The Rathbun Lake Association has invited me to their monthly meeting to bring the event to their attention and the board member I have discussed this idea with would like to include a public viewing of the boats with a vote for the crowd's favorite.  Someone else has mentioned piggy-backing a sand-sculpting event with ours so that we can share attendance.

I will do everything I can to reduce the cost of attending.  I understand that most of you will be traveling and absorbing a real expense simply to get here.  If I can accomplish my goals, participants will get a hamburger & hotdog meal provided at no cost.  I hope to have a merchandise give-away from Scheels, too.  Plan early ...

Please take a minute to view the Honey Creek Website and let me know what kind of accommodations you would like.  I will soon be provided with rates that will include a slip at the resort's docks (40 slips available).  I really hope to latch on to that lingering buzz from the Red Wing meet and get some early confirmed attendees.  More Attendees = More Discounts = More Attendees ...

Thanks to those of you that have contacted me directly.  This event & MN/WI event will be a great way to bookend the summer boating season!

Just to add to Dan's great work...there is an RV rental company that will setup & break down the RV's they rent.  So you can just tow the boat down, walk into your A/C'd camper, and then take off when you're done:

This sounds really fun and a great looking lake.

How far would you say this is from St. Paul? 5 hours?

So it looks like the hotel rooms are roughly $200 per night before discounts. RV sites about $100. And cottages $300 and up. Does this sound right?

I think I might be one for tent camping at the next door state park. Do you think we can still use the slips if we don't stay at the resort?

I'd probably do a slip and hotel room as I'd be bringing the wife and kids who will be 5, almost 4 and 2 1/2 so a kids water park will be a perfect distraction for them as they will only be interested in the boats for so long!

I'm in!

Josh - The kids will love the waterpark...its no Waterpark at MOA...but yours are the perfect age & size for it.  Good slides, nice lazy river, etc.  There's also a very nice playground, hiking trails, etc.  And its large enough that it doesn't ever get too crowded.

(Its amazing what unlimited taxpayer dollars can build...)

Sounds like fun. With a nice hotel and water park I could probably talk my wife into coming but I doubt she'd set foot in the boat!  ;D I'd book something this fall but I have to see what happens with my boat over the winter. If I end up doing the motor/drive translplant I know it won't be ready to go in June, or July or August.....LOL   Otherwise I'm in!

All the easier to convince the wife it'll be a great time and more than just "the guys" talking about this and that old boat owner issues! ... Not that there's anything wrong with that of course! ;)

Prices listed above are representative ... yes.

We're a single income household right now & I, too, would be looking to not-spend where I didn't have to.  However, I do think that the variety of accommodations on the same body of water might allow some of you to bring the wife and kids where you otherwise wouldn't.  For anyone interested, there is an active DNR walleye hatchery at the lake as well.

Slips can be rented to non-hotel guests, too ... When I asked, they had said they've never had anyone but hotel guests request one, so they'd get a price for the slip only to me with the rest of the information.

Glad to see the building interest !

I think the location and the timing ar great, Toni and I had a great time in Red Wing ( as always ) and getting the motorhome back out on the road sounds like a lot of fun.

Dan's working on a better flyer...my Labor Day weekend has been spent with the flu.  So I've had lots of time to sit and mess around on the computer...(the links are not functional).

Dan:

I rented a cabin at the campground, they have 4, and with my rental, now only one left.  Dog is allowed.  It was very cheap, just a single room cabin, bath and shower in a nearby building.   If I bring some beer drinking buddies they would prefer this.  If my wife comes along, then I'll upgrade to the resort.    Thanks for the event.   Tom S.

I know which cabins you're talking about.  Great to know you'll be here.  The event is still many months out ... which is great in terms of preparation.  Glad to hear the dog was welcome, too.  Thanks for posting!

Man, the lake was so nice that day.  I wish I had my good camera, then ... that picture came off my phone.
By June 1st, the sun should be setting in about the same place.  Almanac has the "official" sunset time as 8:38 for a Friday Sunset Cruise ...
That picture was taken just after rounding the bend from Honey Creek into the main lake channel and headed towards Bridgeview Park.

I've been meaning to get in touch with Dan.  Weather is still nice down here...no snow, no ice on lakes, still above freezing during the day...has me thinking about starting my swim platform project.
