It's a Lot cheaper to just re-build a tansom and raise the drive a couple or three inches, thats what I did to Red's Gold,  I set the transom back 6 inches and raised the drive 3", that didn't change the balance of the hull because that motor was 200 pounds lighter than a stock 260hp.  Most all the SS drives had a 1.32 ratio, and that was a good thing if you had the torque and hp to spin it, but thats a bit expensive to accomplish with a small block.  I have the Alpha One with the 1.32 SS gears and bearings that I had built for Barb's boat by a builder on lake Havasu, but it's not a shorty, and I thought that motor would spin it, but it didn't really do very well, we had to drop pitch from a 23 to a 21 to get the rpms back up, the boat still ran pretty good, but not what I expected.  I ran that drive when we first put the stroker in her boat and it turned 5200 rpm with the 21 pitch powertech speed @ 71 /72 mph,  then we put the Gen II on the boat with the 25 pitch PowerTech and it turned 5100 /5200 rpm at the same speed, but with an amazing exceleration.

The shorty's are getting Hard to find, only made them two years I think, they are really expensive, the gears and bearing is bigger and tougher alright, but it takes some serious horse power to get them to perform, normally produced by a big block motor.

There are upgrade kits out for the pre alpha drive also right? I thought I remembered reading somewhere that there was a thicker shaft and a different bearing combo to put in the lower unit. That might just be what was upgraded on the alphas too and I have my facts confused.

You could always put an Gen I Alpha leg on yours. Or if you want real peace of mind, get the SEI Gen I replacement with a no fault warranty.

I stand corrected. In any case, thats good news. I'd love to have one with a mercruiser.

Ok, I'm bringing this back to the top. My spare upper unit is from the 140 that I took out of my cvx16 when I put the V8 and 888 drive in. The gear ratio is different, something like the 140 is 1.86 and the 888 is 1.5. For testing purposes how big of a deal would it be if I shortened the 140 upper and put on a higher pitch prop, I've got a 19 on it now, so if I go to a 23-25ish prop it should keep my rpms similar with the 888 drive and the 19 that is on it now.

That way if this does turn to an epic fail, I still have a good drive I can bolt back up and use, and if it goes well I can do the 888 upper 2nd and pass the 140 off to someone else who wants to do some "testing"

BTW, I will be pulling the motor out this winter to go through it and do some upgrades as well.

Edit: by my calculations, going from 1.5 to 1.86 gear ratio would increase the torque on the vertical "modified" shaft in the drive by %24...

Mercruiser 120's & 140's use a 1.98:1 gear ratio.
