Sometimes its just the little things a rookie misses
« on: March 22, 2013, 08:49:06 PM »
So the first 115 Johnson i got for the GT only had power tilt...
so t bought another 73 Johnson parts motor with tilt and trim, after verifying proper operation after the carb rebuild i pulled the parts off the donor motor, had to dissemble the trim motor and pump, clean up, repair some bad wiring in the motor and replace the cord.
while i had it apart i cleaned and painted the mid section and some of the trim parts, got it all together tonight.
I was so proud, and as i was looking where to mount the tow hooks on the transom and thinking about drilling for the motor i came to the sad conclusion that the "external" trim/tilt aint gonna fit on a GT... bla   :(  >:(
now what...
sent a txt to someone that listed a 79 100hp javelin with a bad cyl on CL, hopefully that will pan out

Maybe go aftermarket? Or buy a merc!

Our old Chrysler boat had a CMC power trim system. Maybe you can find a used one somewhere. the only thing with ours was the steering cable was not very happy!

Looks like you've got the holes on the framework to set a static trim angle ... I had a stripped female thread on my Merc trim cylinder up at Red Wing.  I just bled all the fluid before I left town so that when I got there and put in the water I wouldn't leak anything out.  It took a two or three tries to get that pin set in the right spot, but it let me play fairly reliably for the weekend.  Bring whatever you have down to Iowa, nobody will notice you're missing power tilt/trim.

Honestly, Mark (catchnedge) runs his gt-150 w/o power trim and his does just fine without it.  If you can get it to work, great, if not, no biggie!

True, I do still have the tilt only that would fit, but the 79 for $200 is a good buy, with a good lower and prop. then I have an extra motor complete to sell or as a spare.

hey, it's easier to jump a GT150 over roads without power trim anyway!

That sucks.
I wonder if any of that would fit on my 69 E.
I have one with no T/t and one with tilt only.
So your problem is that its too wide for the 150 transom, correct?

Yes, too wide.
I think that unit would bolt on to a 69
I have it listed on CL but would certainly "cut you a deal"
I just got this for $200
Had a bad piston

i'm pretty sure the block is the same, but may have to swap lots of parts.
may just rebuild the 79, have to see after i open it up.

I was looking at my '77 Evinrude with the same style trim motor. Seems like you could mount the trim motor inside under the rear deck and get a couple of hoses made to run out to the connection points. Should be way cheaper and way less expensive than all the engine work.

Ok. Just looked under the rear deck on my CVX. With a heavy duty 90 degree bracket I could mount my trim motor to the plywood flotation boxes. Called a local auto parts store and the said they could make two hoses for less than $50.

You may want to explore this option.

Making the pump remote...
That's a good idea, funny that when I was working on the pump, B4 I got it fixed I wondered if I could just rig up a mercrusier pump (have 3 of them) but did not think about making it remote.
Well I have a new motor now, so I have many options !

Dang...
an adapter bracket, man i'm really slippin here  :P
maybe i just wanted an excuse to get a newer motor...
i am going to look into either the adapter bracket or making the pump remote (it will hit the water with this motor regardless)
and the 79 will be made whole and swapped on later
