PropTesting on White Bear Lake
« on: June 13, 2013, 07:03:42 PM »
Over the winter I bought 2 used OMC (20" and 22" pitch) Rakers and polished them up, and also purchased a new Mercury Lightspeed 22" pitch. These props needed testing and today the weather was perfect - not to hot and just a slight chop on the water.

First was the Mercury Lightspeed 22" pitch. Same as a Laser II, with a good reputation as a performance prop that holds the bow up. The take off was smooth and gripped better than the Rakers. Bow lifted. Gripped well around the corners. But the top speed was 52.8 MPH at 5,400 RPM, slowest prop tested for the day. Good prop, but perhaps the blades are too big.

Next the two Raker 22" pitch props, one bought as new and the other used. 53.3 and 54.2 MPH at around 5,300 to 5,400 RPM's. The Rakers are not quick out of the hole, and lose grip around the corners, but they are fast and hold the bow high. The motor hums with this prop. With a Raker 22" last fall in cold weather with quite a chop and back wind, the boat hit 55.0 MPH, so 54.2 MPH today in warmer weather and 9 gallons of gas in the back seat was respectable.

Next the two Raker 20" pitch props, both bought used and cleaned up and polished. Thought maybe the 20" pitch would give the boat more top RPM's and increase speed over the 22" Rakers, but the top speeds were slower at 53.0 and 53.5 MPH turning more RPM's, 5,500 to 5,700 RPM.

Don Larkey and his wife stopped by the lake in the afternoon with his over-the-hub exhaust SRX 23" racing prop. The boat did not overrev on takeoff, handled the boat very well, but went only 53.0 MPH at 5,000 RPM. The three men finished the day with a slow, medium, and fast boat ride around the lake to finish off the gas.

In summary, it is hard to beat a Raker prop, I have some props to sell, and the white cap again proved easy to find on the water.

Thanks Gregg, Don, and Don's wife for sharing in this boating event.

How much did you snag the 20 Rakers for?  I'd like to try one on my boat.  The dealer near me that allows you to test any prop they have in stock only had an 18 and a 22 Raker for me to try. I found the Raker acted like an automatic transmission. It slips to spin up the RPM's and then you feel it bite and then the motor goes into overdrive and as mentioned, the motor just hummmmmms. It's the smoothest prop I've tested out of about 5 or 6.

I love the Raker. Very popular prop with the bass boats here. We put a 22 Raker on a 17 foot bass boat with a Johnson 110, jackplate and a straight river and we hit 67 on GPS.

What would you be asking for a 20 Raker?

No we know why Dave spent so much time making sure the bottom of his boat was spotless!

We all know the hard work that goes into restoring even a boat purchased in decent condition. I count about 22 improvements make to the boat and would not want to know the hours spent. My wife would say too many.

At this point, I would like to keep one 20" Raker, and the other one has been spoken for. Both were purchased used, one for $150 and the other for $95, but several hours of sanding and polishing to make them look like new.

For sale would be the Lightspeed 22" purchased new and used one time, for $260 plus freight, and a 22" Raker for $230 plus freight.

Those are affordable prices for Rakers. Down here they start at $150 and go up to $225 used. I'm about a 1/4 mile from the boat dealer. I might pop in and see if they have a 20.

Now that you have done all the testing what should I buy for my CVX16 with a 1998 Johnson 115.  I'm running an Apollo 19" stainless steel mainly for skiing, I get about 49MPH, what should I get for more top speed.

Thanks

Joe

I have tested two variations of the OMC SST II 21" stainless steel props, and they were both 1-1/2 MPH slower than the Raker 22". Last week tested a Quicksilver Lightspeed 22" 3-blade stainless steel prop and it was also 1-1/2 MPH slower than the Raker 22".

The remaining question is whether a 20" or 22" Raker is faster. The OMC I am told can handle 5,700 RPM, so in the testing on White Bear Lake last Thursday, at WOT the 22'" Raker was hitting about 5,400 RPM and the 20" Raker about 5,700 RPM. The 22" Raker was faster than the 20" Raker and at a lower RPM, 54.2 MPH at 5,400 RPM, so the 22" Raker will be my best prop for top speed.

Have not tried a Ballistic, Turbo, Michigan Rapture, or some other brands, but the Raker seems to be a great performance prop.
