Somedays you just can't win for losing
« on: June 23, 2013, 07:52:44 PM »
So I fixed my throttle and I'm on the chain of lakes in northern Illinois and it's a good day. The boat is running great so on the way home running between 35 and 40 I hit a boat wake. I take it right no big deal. At some point I look down and the hatch cover is cracked in half. It was perfect no stress cracks nothing it just broke. So now where do I get another one. The U P D place in Florida or does someone have a source.
Thanks

From what I have read here in the past, I think they are tough to find but I dont know why a Glass place couldnt form one. Probably NOT cheap!
Try to find someone parting out a 23, check Ebay etc.

That sucks. Just out of curiosity, was it open when you were cruising? it seems like it would be nice to have it open a little to get a breeze through  the boat but maybe not if it's going to break.

You might be able to send it to masterglas in lakeville MN and have him duplicate it.

I plan on making a mold of the one I got that is cracked. I plan to make it out of carbon fiber should look cool and will be really strong. Prob won't do it till this winter though.
I think this has become an addiction.

Red's guy wanted $300 to make a mold and produce the cover for me.  Red was going to help me make the mold and take it to him to save some money on it, but we built an engine instead. Sorry Otto.  It's still in the plans though.

It was closed when it broke maybe it just got old.  I would trade a hatch cover for you're engine any time.
I guess there's always glue and rivets

My mom was telling a story the other night of a bridesmaid at a wedding she was helping set up   The bridesmaid split a toenail about an hour before the ceremony. Fearing she might loose the nail she asked for superglue. ll my mom could find was gorilla glue but the bridesmaid slapped enough of it on that nail I doubt it will ever come off!

Maybe gorilla glue the heck out of it until a replacement can be found?

See if you can find a plastics shop nearby that will sell you some Methylene Dichloride.
When I was in college, we use to build our architecture models in plexiglass and used the Methylene Dichloride ... it was sold to me in an old cough-syrup looking bottle - flask shaped, brown glass, complete with a skull and crossbones sticker on it and a POISON label.  Was kinda funny bringing a date into my dorm room when that bottle was left out ...

Anyway, brush it on both pieces quickly, press them together.  You're essentially solvent welding the two pieces together ... and, if done properly, your solvent weld will be stronger than the actual plexi ...

It won't take away the line - but it will make your piece one whole ...

Another ugly solution we use to do with cracked plastics on our dirtbike fenders was to drill several small holes up and down each side of the split and use wire to frankenstein stitch that piece up ...

If you didn't get wet, you didn't have fun ~ WetRaider
