So What's Going On?

Anyone know why we had 129 people online at the same time on this board today? Record is 157, which I think was after the big meet in Red Wing a few years back. Spammers?

The 157 was back when we were hit by spammers.
The last 24 hours we've been hit hard, BUT SFS has kept all scum bags out ...

I'm watching ...

We're either getting spammed or web crawled...I've been tracing IP's to try and figure it out...but...looks to be spammers.

I noticed all the guests on board this afternoon. My OMC to Merc conversion post had several hundred views in a short time. Maybe people from the other boater forums are curious?

We can turn off 'Guests' from reading through the forums, but that means shutting the doors to the true casual visitor...and that would only be a temporary last resort kind of thing.

    Most times I am on its the same familiar folks on here and a few guests.   Never seen it with 140 on at the same time.    I suppose shutting access to guests is one answer, but it would likely hurt sign ups of people that are truly interested in Glastron boats.

That is why it said it would be a temporary, last resort option.

We just had one get in...could be a busy couple of days.

I don't know if it had anything to do with this problem, but when I first looked at the forum this morning, I got several white screens with "fatal errors" message, intermittently, when I would select a page, but would return to normal when I would use the back arrow for previous page.

Might be the volume of guests on the site.
It's been this way (server errors) for two days now, at least for me ...

I'm thinking we should shut down "Guest access" for a few days.
Looks like only two have got in so far.

Agreed, I've turned off guests being able to browse the forums.  I suspect that won't kick existing connections out, but should stop new ones from starting.  We'll see.

Ok, if you try logging out, and pull up the forums again...you will be required to log in...you're stopped at the front door.

We'll see if that bleeds off the spammers/crawlers...a minor DoS attack hopefully averted!  (DoS = Denial of Service)

     Just noticed 382 online peak record set today, with most guest viewing folks profiles.   I suppose to collect email?   Not really up on the spammers and such that occurs online, but I do appriciate the folks who manage this site for all their hard work, it looks to be a never ending task.

Just to ease everyone's fears a little bit...

That 'Who's Online' feature that everyone uses to see what folks are doing, is only what they're *Attempting* to do...not what they're *Permitted* to do.

I've just gone through and added over 10,000 IP's from Russia & the Ukraine to our Banned filter list.  I hope I haven't caught our favorite Slovenian in one of the bans, but he knows how to get a hold of me if he does.

As far as I can tell, they're no longer searching through the forums, and are being stopped at the front gate.

The forum is running much better now. Thank you to our administrators for fighting the battle against the evil IPs! You guys do a great job with keeping the board running.
I will admit i was a little worried when I saw the number of guests users this afternoon.

Rich - They totally were, I'm sorry, I blocked everyone out of pure jealousy!

I even had to block a Nigerian prince who only needs $5000 to unlock $200M dollars in long lost treasure!


Still blocking IP's....they're coming from Russia, the Ukraine, Africa, Singapore & Malaysia! Whew!
