i was talking to a guy i work with, he worked at the larson/glastron plant in little falls for quite some time.
he thought it looked more porosity than fish eye, maybe too much pressure or too close with the gun.
after reading some about about it i took another shot at it tonight, heat the shop to 75, lowered the pressure to about 30psi and backed off with the gun and things look decent, hopefully i can get i coat on the bottom tomorrow night.

Did you reduce it? I go 2 full coats and a 50-50 coat with duratec and 3% wax DON'T DO A COAT AND WAIT IT HAS TO FLOW TOGETHER.

The first pictures, I will agree with your friend, a lot of gel there, to close and pressure ripples it like that, the last picture looks like it does when I done it, I call it grapefruit size orange peel :) and I can't get it any smother than you did with out thinning it down twice the recommended amount, and several coats.

I'll put the dump gun in the mail usps Monday, I think I've used up the paper cups on other stuff mixing, but you can order them from fiberglass supply, but I still have the plastic one that came with the thing, and a bunch of the plastic bags, and I have a bigger size nozzle for it to shoot the flake, and the mekp measuring thing too, you can have it all, but you really got to keep moving with that thing, "don't be a Pokey" :) as Jerry would say.

The dump gun works best to build off a mold, but I did use it for shooting the flake on one of the boats, and I used a Lot of flake with it, about 6 or 7 of those spoons I told you about, twice as much as I used in my primer gun, and I thinned the gel coat, flake.  The nozzle on this thing is about 1/4" and it won't shoot "up" just downwards and slight angles, hold it "UP" until you get it to your project, do some practice for sure, but  Don't Forget !  if you don't have the button pushed when you point it down to your project, it "pee's" the resin right on the project, then when you do push the button it throws you a glob, took me twice to remember that :( push the button it's on the way down to your project, or at least while as soon down.

got the final coat on the bottom of the hull last night :D
i will sum up the process i went through applying the gel coat to the bottom
i know i did not do everything correctly, and im sure someone will disagree with the things i think i did right, but i collected lots of info from many sources, then did some testing

sand all the yellowish gunk off with 220 grit dry (DA)
hung the boat from the ceiling (aprox 4' clearance at the keel)
after finding about 1/4 of the boat was painted after repairs were done, sanded most of the paint off with 80, then 120
ground out the epoxy repairs and repaired them with resin/hair/cabosil/filler as required
wet sand all with 120 grit
clean with acetone
apply 1 coat of unwaxed gelcoat (2% MEKP) to keel with 3/8 nap mini roller
apply 1 coat to entire bottom with 3/8 nap mini roller (2.3% wax, 10% duratec and 2% MEKP)
-----
this was quite a disaster, too much orange peel but bigger prob was globs created due to gelcoat plugging up the roller
wet sand with 220 in attempt to save some of it, more wet sanding, another trip for sandpaper, more wet sanding, GFIC trips out (again), blow all the water out of the sander and sand more
in the end i sanded it dry (120grit) with a vacuum hooked to the sander until it was smooth, i suspect i removed about 75% of the gelcoat i rolled on (now i know i need to spray it)
-----
tested spraying on the transom with gelcoat (20% duratec and 2% MEKP) (wiped it all of due to what i thought was fish eye) but later decided it was porosity
sprayed transom again (lower pressure and farther back) (20% duratec and 2% MEKP), i was happy with the results
made a 45 degree adapter for the cup on my spray gun
washed hull with water, wait a day
wipe down with acetone twice (second time swapping out rags)
first 2 coats to be (20% duratec and 2% MEKP) (16oz batches)
got about halfway done, apparently took too long on the second batch and it set up in the gun, i thought it was empty so i mixed the last 8oz batch and wasted that cuz the gun was plugged
dug all the "jelly" out of my spray gun
back to express for more gelcoat
decide on 12oz batches
finish first coat and then a second
1 full coat took between 30 and 40 oz total (aprox 100 SQ feet)
apply final coat with 30% duratec, 2.3% wax and 2% MEKP
all tolled i sprayed aprox 9 pints

Nice work Joe !
You are now our Gel coat expert ... If you like it or not ... LOL

Question and minor thread theft ...

Bottom / keel gel of my hull is ground down to the glass from years of beaching, would the roller method work for something like that ?
Where the finish is not a big deal, just something to cover exposed glass.

How about MEKP? You need it in every coat.

on just the keel, maybe.
if you don't like it just sand it back off
do you think you can match the color ?

Use Duratech primer. It's a great filler for Gel (or paint) It's a poly so ya need MEKP with it, but it's great and sands super smooth. I would shoot it rather than roll. You can blend better.

"do you think you can match the color ?"

NO ... I spent hours trying to match the blue on a small chip / gouge on the bow of my old V-156 ...
That's as close as I could get ...

Close would be OK as no one will see it ... and be better then bare glass ...

like Christmas today...
got a dump gun in the mail from Red (thanks)
and drove to Waconia and picked up a new red sunbrella bimini top and a stainless frame that should work with some minor adjustments.

havent been able to spend too much time lately, but i did manage to get the front part of the hull sanded to 1000, i need to get some buffing and polishing compound.
i decided i should shoot the flake on the transom and under the swim platform while its up in the air (will need to do this with HVLP) so Jim came over tonight and helped me build a stand to hold the boat up so i could take the strap off. (i hope to shoot that and a test panel with red gel Sunday or Monday) then i can try the dump gun.
i did put some latex in it just to get a feel for how it works "don't tip it down when not spraying" so what do i do... :/
anyways i was an interesting.
also got my flake
