You would think it would blow a hole in piston (which it did) before it blew the head off ?
That must have been one heck of a BANG !

Would frozen water in cylinder do that, if there wasn't a hole in piston ?

Is there a hole in piston ?
Hard to see on laptop ...

My photos are not so good....there actually is not a hole in the piston but the lighter area around the outside of the piston is damaged.  Whatever broke the casting snapped all the gussets around the combustion chamber....

What did the owner say ?

Would think the piston would go first ...
Was water jacket bent / damaged ?
Casting flaw ?

Maybe Rich has an idea ...

Time for a new E-TEC ...

It is a trade in....knew it had zero compression on that cylinder......just checking to see if it was worth rebuild
no information from owner.....I do not think the water jacket was bent....seems like it ran for a lot of years if it was a casting issue....the broken piece does not seem porous?
seems like hydraulic or freeze damage?......look how clean the combustion chamber is?

The original 1150/115 that was on the pickle did the similar thing, but on mine it cracked the cylinder head in half right through the middle of the spark plug hole. All do from the inner exhaust cover gasket that was sucked in towards the the cylinder ports which allowed water into the cylinder and hydro locked. The pickle sat in storage for 10 years after my father's thumb was ripped off from a water ski rope accident and I'm guessing the gaskets dried out and deteriorated from sitting and not being used. That's where the new 115 had come in to play.

The head piece that is broken out is way to clean like it has been getting water in there for a while. Steam cleaned.

fuel or water in the third firing order can do just that, motor fires up on the first and second cyl, third one has obstruction, fuel, water, aint got a chance, gotta pop
