Shines like a new penny!!!!
« on: May 28, 2015, 09:53:53 AM »
Started wet sanding Phoenix yesterday. Did a test area on the bow. Started with 1000 and 2000 grit. I ran my hand across the area and decided to go get 3000 grit and sanded the area with that. Compounded with 3m imperial, then finness-it 2, then 3m Scotchgard wax. All I can say is WOW! A picture does not do it justice.

Looks great Brandon!  Are you going to do that to your CVZ also?

No the gel in the CVZ is too far gone. Its going to get a new gel coat.  I have way too many holes I have to repair in the top half of the hull. Plus the clear on the metal flake is completely gone on the the top half of the hull. Half of it looks silver instead of gold.

LOOK'S AWESOME Brandon !

I had problems with the FI2 kind of burning, and had to go back to wet sanding to remove it.
After doing some reading ... I should have cleaned the pad or maybe changed the pad.
It builds up on pad and burns ... for lack of a better term ..
Don't know how or what to use to clean pad ?
Shawn ?

WOW ... That's some long serial number ya got there with the "1975 model" in it !

WOW ... That's some long serial number ya got there with the "1975 model" in it !

I had the same problem with the FI2 when I first tired it. I used my grey foam quick attach 3m pad at first and it burned it. so I grabbed my white foam compounding pad and gave it a try no more burning and got a nice shine out of it. Since my compounding pad is double sided it worked out great. Compound with one side then turn over for FI2.

For cleaning the care instructions that came with them both said use a mild dish soap and warm water. Worked well on cleaning up the FI2 on the white pad, but not so well on the grey pad.

Yep my serial number is a long one. And the only one that I have seen that has the "1975 model" stamped with it. By the HIN Phoenix should be a 1974 model. She has all the components of a 1974 starflite but in 1975 colors. I tend to wonder if she was a pre-production model built for the boat show circuit but built for sale in 1975. If my thought is correct that would explain why my transom assembly takes the cork gasket to mount to the transom instead of the oring.

So how did you end up with a stern drive hanging off the bow?  Other than that it looks good.    BTW, I replaced my rub rail, you want some of the old one to fill in that gap?

Thank you Mike, but I have the insert from the cvz I will probably clean up and use. How that gap happened is I left the screw for the end cap out for a couple days and it shrank.

The Wizards finish cut compound worked real good for me. Whenever it started to burn I just wiped it off with a damp cloth and went back at it.     LOTS of work but well worth it!
