Should I Carpet My Glastron V-163?
« on: April 21, 2016, 04:49:04 AM »
Hey Guys..  New member here with a 1971 V-163 Bayflight w/85hp Johnson.

The boat is completely original right down to the textured rubber/vinyl floor covering.  I'm planning some upgrades to the boat with new canvas, stereo, etc...  The original floor covering is in very good shape but I'm thinking about carpet giving it a fresh look and feel under foot.  If I go forward with this, would you recommend making it snap in?  Glue it in permanently? Forget about it and leave it original??  Am I risking the deck plywood by having carpet??

Your opinions are appreciated..

Tim

Personally I'd leave the original floor covering, it won't smell musty or hold water and it's easy to clean with a brush and a hose. When I rebuilt my V174 I used the same style vinyl carpet.

Welcome to the forum Tim !

Dave had one made that molded around edges of seats, would come out to dry or be cleaned ,no snaps ...
He could explain better .... Very nice ...

I like the feel of carpet with bare feet.   Thought about other coating or coverings when I finished up my CVZ, and carpet won out.  Floor moisture issues with carpet really don't apply, it is never left outside except for when parked in a slip once or twice a year.  Just an opinion, for, you, I'd go with what ya like best, its your boat.

Don't remove the original vinyl. If anything, use snap in carpet like Dave did. Very slick and also easy to clean.

I had an V173 with a vinyl floor. It had carpet cut for it and it just sat in there without snaps or anything to hold in place. It fit snug enough where you couldn't even tell. Shown below.

I was very happy with the one piece marine carpet made by Corinthian that fit around the seats, stayed in place, and could be taken out to clean or dry. After the carpet is cut to fit, it can be bound on the edges. Choose short turf carpet.
