Wood boat cradle
« on: October 01, 2017, 06:08:56 PM »
Does anyone have any ideas or pictures for a boat cradle? I may have accidentally bought another CV, against my better judgement....

I can shoot a picture of mine tonight, but the idea is pretty simple.  I built mine from 2x6's and 2x4's, a square with four caster wheels.  Carpeted bunks that are identical to a bunk trailer.  A few diagonal braces.  Pretty much fits all the CVX line up.

Could you remove floor and stringer with deck still on, replace floor/stringer then cut out most of old transom wood, then remove deck and replace transom wood and rear 2 feet of floor and bilge bowl ?
Interested to see how they added fuel tank in the bow ...

After reading this ... I though you got the green one also ...

Thanks Gil, those pictures helped a lot!

I didn't get the green one, lol! I pick up the gold one on Wednesday. I started to build the frame for the cradle. I had a bunch of 2x4x8's so I doubled them to make them 10' long. I'll buy some 10 or 12 footers for the bunks. I don't have any bunk trailers to match, they're all roller. I do, however, have 2 CV hulls right now to take measurements from. One might think I'm a hoarder, but they're all well hidden in the back yard. Plus the 72 i/o is headed to the dump soon after it's stripped.

My thinking is to make the bunks a little loose on the center bolt so when the hull sits on it they will conform to the hull. Then I can tighten them to the angle. Floor/stringer without splitting the hull, transom (probably) although it was dry and solid when I inspected the hull, but we know how that goes.

Stay tuned for a Facebook build, with input from all you guys. Coconut oil, pressure treated green ply, and the most expensive epoxy money can buy!  ;)

Also, does anyone have pictures of that blue 73 that's in mint condition? I seemed to have deleted them from my iPad and the photobucket link isn't working anymore. Thanks!

Thanks. I'll start a build thread when the boat gets here. Does anyone know who makes the nicer GT decals on eBay? I'm probably going to get the stern decal inserts remade if anyone's interested so they match the nice mylar chrome of the originals. Trying to organize this build in little steps. Glad I have a parts stash and another CV to pull from!

I bought a set of GT bow emblem decals from Poland. Nice stuff, but not chromed mylar or aluminum. The aluminum steering wheel center caps are very nice from Poland. I bought a few of those, too. I'm referring to these ones:

Hopefully I can get an almost exact reproduction of the stern decals. Heck, I'm going to buy a set from Poland just to have. Hopefully the gold 72 will lead into the restoration/modification of my blue 73, so having more than one set is a good thing!

Went to Harbor Freight today. There were no matching heavy duty castors with brakes, but I came up with a solution. The HF 3" castor weight limits are pretty small, but the small $10 dolly is rated at 1000 lbs. So I bought a dolly and 2 lighter duty castors with brakes so it will be a 6 wheeler. Probably put the brakes in the center support.

Thanks for the pictures. Can't wait to show some close ups of my project boat. The dash is the early flat type, and it has a dealer's worth of Quicksilver accessories from the steering wheel to the gauge eyebrows. Funny thing is that I have all those in my parts pile NOS, so anything that's broken or rough on this boat can be replaced with NOS stuff! The factory labels and decals will be the hardest to come by. Pick it up tonight early evening!

I have a decal on my deck, above throttle/control handle, can't remember what it says, something about safe boating.
It's white lettering and about 2 x 4 inches ... Not sure if older ones had it ?

I think the stickers says". Use caution when operating this craft with mind control, as it is not equipped with a steering wheel"? ;)

My CVX-18 had a decal about that size that said something about danger fast boat don't die and please don't sue us for being stupid. Those exact words.

Got it home, but it's dark. Pictures tomorrow. Now the "oh crap" feeling is setting in. By the way, if anyone's looking for a 1972 CV-16 in gold, all original, take it off my hands (cheap!)  before I get a crazy idea of restoring it...

...I'm about to open a can of worms called Glastron restoration...

Sorry what is a boat cradle? Is it like a stationary trailer? I just have mine on the floor with a 2x4 under the center and loads more under chines
