GT Jet Project
« on: October 16, 2017, 05:16:44 PM »
Time to stop talking about it, and start on it!    A buddy of mine had a little jet boat, you know the ones with a jet ski set up, but in a little boat. Lots of fun!!  But then I thought... A little gt-150 would be a great boat with a jet..   I had another gt I was going to fix up so I just needed a jet boat for a donor motor and drive..  Found one!  It's a 94 four winns fling with a 115hp omc motor. Freshly rebuilt.. But the guy didn't want to pay his bill on the rebuild. So after 6 years my motor man said I could buy it if I paid for the parts used in the rebuild. Deal!

First step.. Cut the donor apart.. It actually came apart easy. They had the same rotten core that the glastrons do.  :)  Split it in half to get at the motor and drive. All the controls, stearing and gauges will be used again. The gt is a little smaller so everything should fit.

Next. Time to take the motor out and see how it all goes togather.  I think this will work out good. Very simple set up.

Great project!  Thanks for bringing us along to watch.  While you have that power package out of the donor, how much does it weigh and how will that compare to the weight of hanging a typical outboard on the transom?

Probably make for better weight balance as the engine is forward of the transom.   Really a cool project, could really make for some neat changes to what was formally the splash well area.  Maybe a small sun pad across the rear?  or flip up engine cover?   or maybe a mini CVX cover?     Now to find a diverter that will work on that size jet............

COOL !
Is the motor just a V4 OMC outboard motor ?
The jet assembly just bolts to transom and motor sits on top ?
Large container on side of motor is the fuel tank ?

I don't think the balance will be a problem because the omc power head is the same power head on every other 115 Johnson or Evenrude the only diff is that it's on a jet instead of a outdrive and the boat is rated for a 90hp and that's the same block as the 115 so weight should be the same. It will sit about a foot farther up in the boat. The "tank" I think is a muffler or some kind of expansion tank the exhaust goes through it. As far as the splash well, I have a cover from a 16-ss that fits nice in that spot so that's the plan for motor cover. I'm trying to make it like the motor cover and rear of a 16-ss.

Split the gt today.. As soon as I took all the rub rail apart the top just lifted off. No good wood at all. Transom has only holding togather by about 3" of glass left and that popped off with one twist of a pry bar. Time now to cut out what is left of the floor, stringers and transom.

The gel is in good shape, that's what I look for when I'm going for a new project. Fiberglass in good shape with just the wood being bad.    All the floor, stringers and transom is out. Wood still soaked after being in a garage for two years. I think I can salvage the bow framing and ski locker.  now time clean it up and get it ready for the repower.

I thought closed cell foam was supposed to be water proof?....  HA!  I cut out about 250 lbs. of water soaked foam from the jet hull. No wonder I couldn't lift it.. Now need to clean it up and get it ready for the swap.

Cleaned up the jet and cut it down to fit. Set it in place... This is going to work.. :)   .. It fit like it was made to. Now I'm excited.   ;D   I think I have to call it a jet boat now..

Will you be glassing in that section, or using it as a template?  Curious how the drive mechanism attaches to it's original hull.  Are there fasteners that come from the bottom?

The last 2 pictures show the drive in place. Now I will be glassing it into the rest of the hull. The drive is fastened to the original hull with bolts and sealer, the hull is very thick at that point and that's why I'm saving that and grafting it in about 6" on the transom and sides and about 2' in the front to keep the flat bottom for the jet.
