Intimidator Cap off
« on: December 18, 2017, 08:15:23 AM »
Well, working in the north you have to be creative.....so I decided to hoist the cap of the boat from the roof of my tent garage, using the roof framing from an old tent garage.  This way I could hoist it by myself, and set it on posts.  Seems to be enough room for me to work on the hull now.  It was -27C this weekend, a bit chilly indeed.  Will need to think about a bit of propane heat to make the work a bit more enjoyable.

That's creative!  I like how you can lift and lower at will.  My process is a lot more involved for test fitting...

Your method looks a lot faster though!!!!

I am enjoying the discussions on composites versus wood....will need to find out what is available here in the great white north.

Very creative method of pulling the cap, I applaud your ingenuity.  -27C sounds awful, only 13 degrees Celsius and the scales cross.  In any case, way too cold to set resin, though I have really no idea just how cold it can be to work resin.  Pretty certain resin fumes and fire do not mix. There is plenty to do with the tear out, obtaining the materials, shaping all the pieces to fit including the glass that are not temperature dependent.    You could really go fast when the weather warms up if everything is ready and fitted.  Having a buddy to hand you resin is really handy during layup.  I seem to be able to work about a quart at a time.   Do you have an inside area for engine and outdrive work? There is always that to prep for.

Your hull looks identical, but the center keel looks thicker than mine.   Mine was a 3/4" plywood, the stringers were 2x6.

The engine, outdrive, transom plate, steering mechanism, and trim pump are all stored in the garage.  Seats, back bench, and hood downstairs in the house.  Everything safely tucked away.  Unfortunately my CVX18 steering arm broke loose from the steering shaft this year, so I have to fix that too !!!  The old shaft was a splined type, not the square steering shaft used nowadays, so I will be looking for a new gimbal and steering shaft....the fun never ends.

I will take a look at my  center stringer and take some measurements.
