Welcome, I love the V-179s they are great boats. I think I saw you post on of the Facebook pages.

Looks like yours is a 1973? I have a 1975.

I do have a few extra parts laying around if you happen to be looking for something.

Thanks! yes I did join a few different groups-I wish I lived in a State with a Club! I do have a registration and a bill of sale but the date is confusing me-I agree it looks like a earlier boat. Have you ever removed the stern drive? I'm having troubles with that right now. I may hit you up for some parts later in this build.

I have removed a mercruiser stern drive but not a Volvo. Sorry I won't be able to help with that aspect.

Thanks for the info, my number is messed up I have 3 digits ID ing my model and then followed by seven numbers, this is on my registration paperwork and it matches my State ID on the boat but I have yet to find a number on the boat transom or otherwise, I have found serial numbers on the engine and stern drive and trailer

so I was removing the wind screen when I found the tag and then another serial number that matches what I have on my registration imbedded in the fiberglass under the console on the drivers side-so its good- but what would be the date on this one? or is it not indicated here.Im thinking that one of the other serial numbers from other components may tell me once I find a look up.

That number does not have the date code on it. That would only be on transom.

Could be a early 1973 ... Maybe ...

From CGOA ...
http://www.classicglastron.com/gl-identifying2.html

"Boats that were manufactured from 1970 - 1973 carried a seven digit number. The fourth
number from left indicates the year of manufacture. "

In 1973, Glastron starting using letters (GLA...) in the Hull Numbers.
Prior to that, the  early 70's were just seven numbers, with the fourth number from the left being the year
(4322414 would be 1972). Starting in 1973 we were required to use prefixes.
Using the prefix you can determine the location the boat was built. Then
the seven digit  id number will follow. A single letter and 2 or 3 more numbers which will tell
you the year of manufacture. These procedures are in accordance with coast guard federal
       regulations"

Note that from 1973 forward hull ID numbers were stamped into the rear of the boat. This was federally
required for all '73 and later boats. This is good because the number will always be there and easily read in most cases.

I agree with Greg, 4th digit of the 7 digit serial number is the date. In this case it would be a '73.

In the 60's, up to 1969 they had a 6 digit serial number and the 3rd digit indicated the year. Here's mine from my V174. The 3rd digit is a 7 making it 1967.

Interesting. I agree with you too now Gregg. Probably an early 73 before they had the new HIN system in place.

I agree it's a 1973. The yellow v179 was only produced in 1973. I have parted out one and purchased parts off of several other 1973 179s all were yellow.

Gotta like that serial number though, 12345 with an additional 1 at each end.

I have the same combination on my luggage. ;-)

I love it...now its even MORE classic. I think I'm ready to pop the engine out now if the weather co operates. No telling how long that will take. I also found this tag under the dash, I'm thinking maybe it was on the transom at one time? - I have not been able to totally read it because of its location but I think it says the same but with V179 in front of the serial number. This unit has been messed with-my windshield was half pop riveted in

Mid to late 60's boats had blue tag back by transom.
Latter 60's early 70's had it behind dash.
Most 60's thru 70's had glassed in tag under splash well or rear deck on I/O's.
Should be model number on blue tag, followed by a letter for color.

Yep ... near imposable to get a good camera shot of it ...
Tag off 1972 V-156 / blue.
