Gunnel upholstery
« on: April 23, 2018, 07:52:00 AM »
Have a 1971 CV 19 that has been a project boat over the last few years.  Have it posted on the Classic Glastron site.

http://www.classicglastron.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=11183

Well we are down to the last step which is the upholstered wood that goes around the top/inside of the boat. Wood used for the first attempt warped out of shape on the bend between port side and front dash.

Since the GCOAMN seems to have more activity I am reaching out over here to see if anyone has suggestions on the material to used to make the bend.

Love to hear the materials others might have used on this.

Thanks

When I stripped down my CVZ-18 for rebuild it had metal strips bent to match the curve of the console and then pop riveted in place to retain the vinyl.

The aluminum piece go's over vinyl and rivets to deck to make curve.
Hard to explain ... Easy to do ... LOL

Make your pattern out of cardboard.  You'll find it will have a slight "moon" curvature to it because the surface of the fiberglas curve isn't exactly vertical.

Got it figured out.  Used a plastic to create the bend.  Kinda like wacky wood approach.   After it is put together will post pictures of finished product.

Then I am back to insulating the engine hood.  Did it last year and worked fine till the insulation dropped.  Have some hangars to use this time.

Thanks for your feedback on my request for info.  Much appreciated.

From the factory you use the aluminum strip on the top then stretch the fabric down and around the bottom, then it gets stapled to the wood on the back side of the glass.
I think this has become an addiction.

Thanks.  Been a long project.   Re-insulating the inside top of the engine cover this week.  Then I am done, for now....  Did is last year and had it drop on me.  This time I am using a better glue plus metal hangers.  The good news is I could hear how much the insulation reduced the engine noise before it dropped.  So project worth re-doing.  Merc 383 stroker runs loud...
