Hull Identification Number
« on: April 26, 2018, 08:17:08 PM »
There was a thread some time back on the discussion of hull identification numbers, and whether the serial number had to start with certain letters to be a genuine Glastron/Carlson. I can not locate that thread, but promised Gregg I would post my HIN on the 1987 Glastron/Carlson CVX16. Starts with CNO and ends with the date 87

Not sure if it helps, but this is the HIN on an 85 Timi.  If ya need, I could go over to the storage building and get the CVZ him.

Are we sure the change isn't just because of some corporate bankruptcy and needing to sell under a different corporate entity, thus the changing of the first 3 ltr's of the HIN?

first 3 letters indicate manufacturer and last 2 are the year. In the middle is usually the build/ production # and model. They are manufacture specific.
I think this has become an addiction.

This boat or vessel has a Certification Date of (76) and a Model Year of 76 with month of build (January) based on the formatting of your hull_identification_number (HIN) .
The manufacturer identification code (MIC) of your craft identification number (CIN or HIN) is GCV. This MIC (GCV) stands for the company name Glastron-carlson which is currently Out of Business. This boat manufacturer has other company names (GCV sometimes goes by these name(s) , , , or .

The first three letters of the HIN are the manufacturer's identification code. There are 16,136 different MIC's.

http://www.uscgboating.org/content/manufacturers-identification.php?pageNum_manufacturers=7&totalRows_manufacturers=16136

My guess is that Glastrons have different MIC's because they had different legal entities.

My CVX-16's MIC of CNO means Glastron-Conroy Industries

I just Dave's but here is what it says.
CNO HIN Decoder

Our HULL ID Decoder breaks down the Hull identification number into the following information:
The HIN or CIN you have entered meets the Current-Format HIN format. It might also be a type that contains the country code and thus the boat comes from USA or Other . The serial number of the HIN is 06174 and is set by the boat builder. This boat or vessel has a Certification Date of (6) and a Model Year of 1987 with month of build (July) based on the formatting of your hull_identification_number (HIN) .

The manufacturer identification code (MIC) of your craft identification number (CIN or HIN) is CNO. This MIC (CNO) stands for the company name Glastron-conroy Indust which is currently Out of Business. This boat manufacturer has other company names (CNO sometimes goes by these name(s) Conroy Industries, , , or .

This company (Glastron-conroy Indust) is owned by David Mosley and is located at 3150 I-H 35 W in NEW BRAUNFELS state of TX. It manufactured this vessel and placed your HIN or CIN on the hull. The Parent Company for this boat maker is GENMAR HOLDINGS INC (). Glastron-conroy Indust has started making boats, yachts and other watercraft as of 8/20/1982 12:00:00 AM and went out of business on (4/28/2005 12:00:00 AM) in the following country: .

Make sure to compare the date of boat manufacturing with the dates in which the company was actually in business.

The US Coast guard provides this comment about this watercraft manufacturer: All Glastron Boats Will Use 'gla' After 8/88shown Oob 880902-mso Corpus Christi Reports Active-891215 Oob Per Ppg 4/28/2005..

Appears to be 86 and newer Glastron/Carlsons (and maybe Glastron) are CNO. It probably is as Doran says some major change in the company like a bankruptcy. Since Genmar bought Glastron in 82 then maybe it just took that long to make the change to the HIN.

When I asked John Carlson why the Metric's design only lasted a short time, his answer was "Politics".
Which would have been around the 1981 to 1984 time frame.
The Conroy / Glastron connection started about 1967.

The Timi has a 4, the CVZ is nearly filled in from primer, paint, flake and clear but it appears to start with gcv and end with 79.

We are aware that Glastron made model changes within the year's production run. For example, my 1987 CVX-16 has the front seat headrests that appeared in 1986 but should not be in 1987. Part of my HIN is "G6" standing for certified production in July of 1986 - an early 1987 model carrying over the headrests from 1986, dropped later in the 1987 production run.

I once started a post on this. I think it was on the CGOA board. Back then there wasn’t that much participation.
