Help, it's time to start it up...
« on: May 24, 2018, 10:24:20 PM »
It's time to see if the 1974 Glastron Bayflite is going to run. It has the Mercruiser 140hp 4 cyclinder stern drive.  Before I turn the key, here are my plans to get it started after sitting for over 12 years.

1. Pull plugs and put a bit of oil into cylinders.
2. Manually turn crank to ensure engine isn't frozen
3. Replace plugs.
4. Change oil and filter.
5. Drain fuel, replace fuel filter, and lines.
6. Replace belts and anything else which looks worn.
7. Replace battery.
8. Hook up earmuffs and turn on water.
9. Am I missing anything???
10. Turn the key!!!

For oil, I assume a 10W-30 will be good? I didn't have any luck finding what oil filter it takes. My plan is to remove the one which is there and bring to auto parts store to get new one.

To change topic, the boat overall is in good shape.  It has some dock rash, console is cracked, and carpeting is worn.  However, the floor is solid and vinyl is in good shape with a couple minor seams which are ripped.

I would add impeller and lower unit lube to your list. Also likely would need a carb kit.

If its been sitting that long without being used it might be a good idea to check out all your rubber such as gas lines, water hoses, and definitely the bellows and trim lines before you think about putting it in the water.  Nice looking boat though, the finish looks like it will shine up nicely.

Looks nice! I’d hook a hose up to it first, see if water pours out of block in case it’s cracked. They seem to always crack to the outside on the block behind the intake manifold. Then go through your list.
