Title: Lithium Ion Marine Batteries?
Post by: 185GXSF-Guy on September 18, 2019, 08:49:13 AM
Hopefully I am posting in the right area - if not, please let me know.

Does anyone out there have experience using Lithium Ion Marine batteries?  How well do they work?  Are they ready for "prime-time?"  Are they a fire hazard?

My main interest is being able to save weight as lithium ion batteries look like they are about 1/2 the weight of traditional lead-acid batteries.  I have three batteries in my 2001 Glastron GX185 SF (two trolling motor batteries and one cranking) and I might be able to save 80-100 pounds.

Thanks!
Paul

Welcome Paul!

Everything I've read says that they are indeed ready for primetime...you'll be a fairly early adopter so there *could* be longevity issues I suppose.  Li-on's will always be a fire hazard, but I'm sure you know that since you're asking about it.

I'd run one...what kind of costs are you seeing?

Well, here's one for nearly $1000 on Amazon :

https://www.amazon.com/LiFePO4-Volt-Deep-Cycle-Battery/dp/B06XX197GJ/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_2?keywords=Lithium+Ion+Marine+Deep+Cycle+Battery+Group+27&qid=1568836582&sr=8-2-fkmr2

It all sounds good, but $1K?  There must be more affordable alternatives.

Never tried the Marine batteries, but I have been using them in my motorcycles for about 4 years now.  They are great in that application.  One of my bikes is an on/off road that mostly gets abused off road and gets ridden summer and winter here in Wisconsin. That the oldest one at 4 years old.  It has not let me down,  rarely needs charging and shows no signs of weakening as of yet.

I really don't think there are yet.  Needs a few years to bring the costs down.
