Confession ...
« on: July 15, 2011, 07:12:30 PM »
Please don't crucify me.

Went to look at a Stingray earlier. RS 180, 3 litre merc alpha. Any opinions on that motor?

Boats been outside for about a year'n half & the interior is filthy'n near trashed. But I know somebody that can fix that. It's all there otherwise. Well 'cept for the missing walk thru windshield panel & swim ladder, etc ...  But the price is right.

Me'n my little brother David'r gonna try'n get it started tomorrow.

So, is it yours now Doug?

I thought the 3.0L motor in my '96 Glastron was a rock solid reliable motor.

If it's instead of fixing the 153, I think you're way ahead with it. Looks like a nice boat.

Doug what year is that?
Back in the late 80's early 90's, I had gotten some brochures on Stingrays and I thought they were nice boats. They were touting some "special" kind of hull at the time.
Its certainly sharp. Interior looks more dirty then shot?
Hey, if the price is right.....

Bad news y'all. Motor is puked. No compression in one cyl, 50 in another. Dang! Had my hopes up.

That one's a '97 Ross. They call it the patented Z-Plane hull btw. My brother has a 19 footer with the 4.3 he bought new in '01. Been a great boat for he and his family.

They are fast too. His'll do 52 or 3 with a full fuel tank & half a dozen crew on board. StingRay claims 50 for the 18' w/3.0 with light load & stainless prop.

Oh well ... next!

Low ball offer him and put a new motor in Doug!

Just a thought!

What's the price? Offer him $1000 less and tell him that's what it'll cost to repair the motor for anyone. He's not going to sell that boat with a bad motor unless some one with (a) engine building experience comes along, (b) some one like one of us here is willing to take on the project. It's fun to watch people squirm on these deals.

I'd looked at a Starcraft like this boat about 24 months ago. Guy was asking $1800 for it. Trailer needed work and the entire floor needed to be replaced. I offered him $800 to get rid of his headache. No deal. Guess what? Saw it today still sitting in the same spot with weeds about 5 feet tall all around it. Goof ball. Could of had $800 and no weeds.

Thanks for the suggestions guys but there are way too many red flags in this scenario. The womans late husband owned the boat. She's living in la la land I guess and presumably hasn't set foot or laid eyes on the boat for a couple years. Though it's sitting right outside her house.

According to her the boat was "meticulously" maintained by their son following her husbands death. Uh huh. This is the image she has in her head & far be it from me to try'n dislodge it. She'll almost admit the boat is dirty. But to present her with the info her beloved caretaking son done blowed up the motor? No thanks. A man has to know his limitations ...

Kinda sad actually. Feel sorry for her. The boat too cuz it'll just sit there'n rot & atrophy & get more wasp nests in it til eventually the county comes around & forces her to dispose of it. Too bad. Was a nice boat at one time.
