Calling all 'ternator experts
« on: September 01, 2014, 07:32:19 PM »
It appears the alternator in the Ranger has given up the ghost. I'm told there's a replaceable voltage regulator assy within the alternator that might fix the problem.

Anybody had a similar experience?

There's diodes, rectifiers, regulators, brushes, and you don't have the test equipment. Just get a cheap Chinese rebuilt at Auto Zone and be happy.

Not certain what year Ranger we are discussing, but the possibility exists that it may be a replaceable part.  If it were my vehicle, and I intended to keep it for awhile, and I wanted to not touch that part again, I would opt for new and be done.  Otherwise, I would find a boneyard unit, clean it and go through it.   If you are not making roughly 13.8 volts at 1000rpm, then the Alternator is likely the issue.

Doug,
When I had my Ranger, it was a bit overloaded with some audio accessories.  I was able to get my hands on a big 140 Amp alternator that was made for the Ford ambulances  (I believe the standard alternator was either 85 Amp or 95 Amp rated).  I'd just replace the alternator, it should be accessible and a relatively easy swap.

New alternator installed. New battery too. Sigh. Evidently the old battery didn't like being fully discharged? Ah well, after all it was a 2 yr guarantee into it's 3rd yr. I guess that's about right these days.

a little over 2 years on a battery is good these days. If you see one that lasts 4 to 5 years any more its a miracle! When I sell a battery at work the core is usually 2 years old on average.

Tell ya what. I had a battery in my Honda VT500 last for over 8 yrs. No kidding! Even went through a few Buffalo winters in the garage before coming down here.

They don't make em like that anymore. And if'n they do it's by accident ...
