CVX-16 Price for Re-Gelcoat or just Paint
« on: July 17, 2015, 09:39:13 AM »
Hello,

Okay long post Im sorry, but I have managed to save up some money to maybe professionally have my boat refinished. Its a 1980 CVX-16 and the gelcoat it has is already too far gone for a wet sand or clear, and would be expensive to redo originally especially since I already bought red seats and the original boat is Green haha. Anyway I have already tried painting it myself with some low grade marine paints and I am not pleased with the results (Im also a but meticulous) and its my third attempt and all the nooks and crannies on glastrons make it difficult sometimes. So, I have stripped the paint off and am working on more patching and stuff. Im thinking about re-gelcoating Ive found gelcoat for under $100/Gallon and that beats Awlgrip or Interlux by a landslide, all of the re-gelcoat prices Ive looked at online have been like 1k a foot fi you are lucky or like "my buddy got the whole 27' boat including prep done for $800" So Im wondering if I can get a very rough estimate before I go and talk to the marina and potentially make a fool out of myself for a pre-gutted, already prepped, CVX 16. Also it has bottom paint as it was and is going to be an ocean boat should I strip that and get the bottom done too? So all in all could I get a very rough idea on how much it'll cost for an above water line regelcoat and a full topsides and bottom coat. Thank you so Much.

Isaiah

Just a rough guess from what Ed's paying for his CV ...
$5000 and up to flake & gel hull

Joe can give you the prices on just material (gel/flake/etc.) for a 19 foot boat.

doing it without flake will save you big time.
i did flake on the sides of my 19ft open bow (pix), i would assume it would be a similar quantity for a cvx cuz ya gotta do the bow.
2 gal white (i wasted most of 1)
1 gal red
4 gal clear
2 gal duratec hi gloss additive
2 lbs of flake
got about $1200 in to materials
also gil on the nat site did a cv21, i got lots of good info from here http://www.classicglastron.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=2209

if you are changing color, not original, and especially if you don't need flake have it done with a high quality automotive finish (Shawn and or Mike can comment)

Honestly the CVX16 is the most listed Carlson on the internet, you may be way better off just looking for a new one.  The motor and trailer have value as well just look at the NADA listings.

84 Carlson is right on IMHO.

CVX16's are very common and your money ahead just paying up front for one in nice condition. Then you have something that is original which will always be worth more and easier to sell than something that's been redone. Especially if it no longer has the metal flake.

I respect your opinion but I have come a long way on this boat and I am not really looking for a good investment I bought the boat for the fun and learning experience of a restoration and bring another Glastron Back to the water. I know its not original but as you said CVX-16's are a dime a dozen doesn't have to look straight out of the factory, I want the boat to look the way I want it too. I was really just wondering if anyone had expertise in the subject even if financially its not the best option every dollar and bit of time I spend will mean that much more to me in the end.

If you have the time and patients gel-coat is a lot cheaper than paint but a hell of a lot more time to do it . The material is much cheaper , the preparation is much less detailed , the application can be a pain if your going to flake it and the sanding and buffing is the time eater but straight color gel no flake is pretty easy .
Here are the pages of my resto where i royally screwed up the first try at flaked gel-coat and then got it right .

I didn't mea to sound rude earlier but even if I could buy another boat I have no idea how to sell the one I have. Also, Gil CV21 Thank you very much, it's funny I was just looking at your thread when I reloaded and saw that. Your CV21 looks beautiful by the way! Your expertise and talent is inspiring and I love your GT-160. I think I am going to go with Gelcoat and have a local marina do it if its not outrageous Ill contact them tonight, thank you. Am I correct in thinking it would be cheaper to pay labor than buy the paint guns/buffers and deck out my garage since I don't really have much equipment as far as that is concerned.

Thank you for the suggestions, I don't actually know what I'm going to do anymore, but one day it'll be done. Also yes buying a ready to run boat isnt a terrible idea kind of sentimental I guess.

Forum's are a great place to ask questions ...
You get others opinions ... Good ... Bad ... right  or wrong.
But it make you think in other directions.

Look into your options, decide which works best for you.
But keep asking questions ...

You said to ask questions do you have an extra $300,000.00?   We could save a lot of Glastrons.

Also with that money maybe Ross would put up another shed to. So they could be stored inside.

Yeah another larger one could easily be done for well under 300K. The rest would go towards more boats!

I have no experience with gelcoat products, Dueceman, Joe, is the resident expert with very recent experience.  Automotive finishes I am more comfortable with but from a DIY point of view, I have learned plenty from mistakes.  Lately I have been using an online source, paintforcars, where I can get a complete base/clear kit for under $200.  But there is so much more involved with the overall cost, compressor, dryer, guns, prepared space for application, lighting, etc.  Lots of different technologies out there including brush and rolled.  Paying outside labor is expensive, but when you complete your first finish with good results, you will understand the amount of work involved.  I would estimate painting a two color 16' boat with no flake around $2000-2500 from a reputable shop.    DIY projects such as this can be either  rewarding or heartbreaking.  Research can go along way towards your decision, plenty of info from folks on this site as well as videos on the net.  Good luck, Michael.
