Hello - new to this forum, but not new to many other forums (cars, RVs, iboats). My previous boats have been 22' Wellcraft Eclipse, 28' Wellcraft scarab, and 32' double decker pontoon I rigged with a 1975 Merc 1500 Tower of Power.
I am boatless now, but have $ ready for the next boat. I've always liked the retro Glastron, so I am going to buy one.
The search is on!
18'-19'-20' model.
Would love Berkeley jet drive setup.
Outboard would be next preference.
Motor, trailer, interior, cosmetic projects OK. No space for a stringer/transom project.
I live outside Sandusky, OH 10 mins from Lake Erie. I would use the Glastron for near shore water-sports, 4 people typically in boat. The family doesn't like rough water, so this boat will be used in calm conditions.
However, Lake Erie can kick up 1'-3' chop. I will also be presented with 2' passing boat wakes. Anyone with Glastron experience in these water conditions? Concerned about broadside and water over the stern. All the youtube videos I see have Glastrons running on inland lakes with flat water. Must be nice!, just not where I live.
Thanks !!

I would suggest not getting a jet if you want a smoother ride get an I/o or outboard.

Any of the Glastron's can handle an occasional large boat wake. If your on lake Erie with 1'-3' waves you are going to want one of the bigger cabin cruisers. The Glastron Carlson CV23 might seem like a big water boat but it is not. I've had a CV16SS, V172, and a CV23 all on lake superior but all with fairly calm conditions.
CV23 on Lake superior with gentle 2' rollers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-9Jhk0W2XM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-9Jhk0W2XM)

Welcome to the forum Calvinnator !
How about a 19CSS cuddy ?
I've never been in one but there deep V's and will hold 4 people.
Though a CV23 handled big water well, but then again I'm use to a CV16, which are very light and get bounced around.
You could come to the CGOAMN meet in Aug. and ride and /or drive some G/C's ...

Thanks for the videos, they really show the water conditions and how the boat reacts. About what I expected, the Glastron will get bounced around in the chop. That is OK, the boat was made for flat water, speed, water sports. When I buy one, I just have to use the boat in the correct conditions.
Cabin Cruiser --- yawn :)

I have experience with the Ford 460, and the Berkeley jet is a toy I want to dabble with.
Is you comment about the jet because if you have a jet boat you'll run it fast -- and in the chop that is a rough ride (agree).
or
is there something about the jet in slow speed conditions (to avoid a rough ride) where the jet doesn't perform vs. prop ? Thanks -

19CSS.... disqualified.... no silver flake gelcoat! The sparkle of the silver flake is #2 on my list of must haves for a boat ;D

Most of the classic Glastrons are made for a different use other than 3' chop. Low sides are the indicator. That being said, if that were the primary conditions I'd face, maybe a 27? A 23 at the minimum.

I ran a 23 with the 460 and a Berkley jet for almost 4 years. There is a night and day difference between the ride on my now 23 with an I/O. The jets have nothing to "hold" them in the water and you bounce a lot. Waves big or small you are always on top of them and not really cutting threw them. Maybe a diverter would have helped so you could have some trim to help with the ride.
Just my thoughts I ran 90% of the time on the Mississippi and St Croix rivers by Minneapolis. There are always boats with 2-4 ft wakes behind them.

I would have to agree with Shawn and the others the 23’s are fantastic boats but I too think they were made for going fast on smooth water. Your going to want something that has a deeper v in it than most of the cvx boats. The only ones I think might work for you if you want something classic with sparkle paint in the 18-20’ range I would look for a cvc-18 like this one. It has a deeper v in it and I think it could handle the 2-3’ chop. And a small cuddy for all the extras. Or the 27 would be a good one also.

That's a CV-18SS, not a CVC-18. I'd love to find a CVC-18...

Oops miss print.. cv18-ss or a cvc-18. ;)
-
Try a CV23 and see how it works ..
CV27's are near imposable to find in good to excellent shape ..

Next season we may part with the v215 Vagabond Camper, its driven pretty darn well for us so far on a lake that produces 20+mph winds.

Thanks everyone for the great info. I have a better perspective on the Glastron and the water conditions I will be in. Good news is, I'm still going to buy a Glastron for flat-water watersports!
So now I have to find a 18' 19' 20' Glastron ::)
