Title: Tell Me About Your Car or Pickup
Post by: David CVX-16 on December 09, 2019, 08:18:17 PM
Nearing retirement age, I wanted a reliable new car that would last me the rest of my life. My criteria for a new car was sporty, not too flashy, fast, manual transmission, low or average insurance rates, reliable, two doors, V-6 or V-8, decent gas mileage, and something that could be driven year round.

After first getting hooked on the looks of the Ford Mustang GT with the V-8 430 HP engine, I decided it was too flashy and perhaps the quality could be better. Then started watching driver report videos of the 2017 Honda Accord V-6 coupe with 278 HP, available with 6-speed manual transmission with specs of 0 - 60 in 6 seconds, coupled with gas mileage of 18 city and 28 highway. Every report was favorable on the Honda. The 2017 Honda Accord is the 9th generation, from the years 2012 through 2017. Then there were the rumors that Honda was quitting the Accord Coupe and the V-6, both which proved true. Consumer Report has the Accord Coupe with top marks for being trouble free in all areas. After checking on Cargurus, there were only 10 red 2017 Accord Coupes with manual transmission in the entire nation, and none in the state I lived. Checked prices with the Honda dealers in Town, but got the best deal and ordered from a dealer 125 miles away.

Picked up the Honda Accord in February of 2017. Amazingly fast, yet gets 23 MPG around town and over 30 MPG on the highway. Has gadgets I have not learned yet. Has 18,000 miles on the odometer and will not be used in the winters.

Things I have changed are a better shaped gear shift knob (the one on the right in the picture) from the Honda Accord Sport, magnetic oil drain plug, easier to shift Redline manual transmission fluid, and Honda molded front and rear splash guards (not installed yet).  I applied several coats of Wolfgang paint sealant.  The 1999 Ford Crown Victoria tows the boat.

I got a laugh out of " Has gadgets I have not learned yet " …
I had to look at owners manual three or four times to figure out heat / air controls !
Still not sure about radio / phone system .. It asks a lot of question ..
It also has a tire pressure monitor, wife freaked out when it came on, thought she had a flat tire, it was only a few pounds low … LOL
Love the heated seats !

You guys need to get back to the basics.. take my 24 T for example... no gadgets or doohickeys no door locks or windows to get stuck. Just a key and a starter.. and if the starter don’t work you can always crank it by hand.. my 40 Plymouth is nice and easy also..        the Plymouth is also my daily driver in the summer that way I can keep the boat connected to my rust free from Arizona 02 Durango R/T ready for the water at anytime..    and they all get put away for the winter and I drive ol’red for the winter... rusty but trusty and even survived an oak tree that fell in the last tornado.

Im a die hard GM Guy.

1964 Impala SS I got from a friend after it sat on the side of his house for 11 years. I was a GM tech when I pulled it apart for him to rebuild engine and trans. I believe I was the first person to pull it apart ever and I saved every clip and bolt etc... in plastic boxes in the trunk. That payed off when I got the car. Original motor was rebuild by our circle track engine builder at the time - he decked the numbers off of the block :(... and the trans rebuilt by the trans guy at the chevy dealer I was at, for a 12 pack of beer and the parts.

1970 GMC Was my dads neighbor. It was hit and you can see that in the rear bumper. It sat, I bought it, did a bunch of work to it, lowered it. Trans was on the way out, motor was strong (actual GM target motor). But motor broke crank, had to put a built 355 and go through the TH350 trans.

1986 Chevy Scottsdale only has 95K on it. Got it with 54k for my son when he was in HS. He has personalized it, but its still mine since it isn't in his name yet... LOL.

Back in 2007 this 1967 Mercury Montcalir popped up on craigslist for 2500. I went to take a look mostly to kick tires. Told the owner i'd think about it. Few days later he called me and and asked if were still interested. I offered I'm $400 and he said yes! I thought I just flip the car but fell in love with it and 12 years later I still have it and don't think I could ever sell it. It's pretty much all original. Not perfect. It gets driven all the time, tows the boats, has been in movies, and my twin boys came home from the hospital in this car.

Back in 2009 it was involved in the Coen Brothers movie "A Serious Man". Thanks to Jerry Gilikeson for the referral.

Last summer it was used in a local short film. Trailer below:

I've had A LOT of cars in my years but the other tow of note is my 2003 Marauder I had from 2007-2017. Loved this car. I've always been a ford fan and a full size sedan fan and this was a good as is it gets. This car was my primary tow vehicle for my CV16SS.

Then once my boys were born I started to think it's about time I bought a family car so in 2017 I sold the Marauder and bought a 2013 Ford Mustang GT California Special Convertible with a 6 speed manual. This is my current daily driver and yes, it also pulls the boat! Wifey likes it too!

Good stories above, a lot of deep respect for old machinery no doubt.

My daily driver, 1997 Range Rover. I’ve kept it alive only with the help of the Brits on forums; these things are electrical nightmares. 😀

Yes, I have issues. 😀

I recently parted with this OG 5600 mile 72 T250 Hustler. People gave me a hard time cause of the heads. But from what I read, these were parts bins bikes, as they reached the end of production, different parts could be on the bike. It ran great, I picked it up from a storage unit clear out of a friend of a friend.

Also recently picked up a 84 yz490 from the OG owners wife. The dude put new oil and plug in it and completely drained the carb and tank when he last put it away.
My real goal is a stand and display in the game room. This thing can kill you.

Im would guess with the BFG, trim rings and roof drip rail its either a 68 or 69 Camaro (or firebird). The curve is too rounded to be a chevelle.

What's under the cover in the garage Dave?

I’ve shared it before, so I kept it under wraps:

1966 Impala SS, original 396, 4 speed, AM/FM, gushes, tach, etc.
I’ve owned it since 1977, yes my first car. It was parked for a number of years before I took a few years to go through it, starting about 2001. Freshened the engine, new reproduction interior, wire harnesses, paint etc. Many things I can do, some not (paint, internal engine work). The light body Camaro’s and Chevelle’s could take me off the line but by the quarter mile mark I was winding them in. Nothing could touch it on the top end. Yes, I should have died in that beast a few times over.

Good eye, yes a 75 CL360 Scrambler, I like that machine, a lot of character.
The odd thing with these old Honda’s, they are actually pretty inexpensive when compared to other bikes. If they do not run they are cheap ($500) or so, but one runs the risk of internal engine issues. These things are sitting in barns all over for they were sold by the gazillions in the day and parts are widely available.

Just a fun hobby.

I am not a member. I’m quietly a part a few forums on Facebook. I don’t really show the bikes or vehicles and have them judged either. I produce what I would call “20 footers”, meaning looks good from that distance and not closer. They are all usable, and are used.

Between Facebook forums and YouTube one can learn how to do just about anything.

Gregg, it's all there and it's quite rare to see a nice off-road, enduro bike that's not all beat up and trashed. Now, unless you had one growing up or had a close friend that did - you probably won't be thrilled with performance. These made about 10 to 11 horsepower. It will get you in and out of backwoods terrain and is bulletproof. I've helped beat a couple of these up, but they kept running.

The price is very fair. Gordon

When young all my riding Buddy's had SL100's and 125's.
I had a Kawasaki F6 and could whoop there azz's ..
Before the F6 I had a SL70.

Picture of F6 & SL70 are not my pictures.
Only pictures I have are my VF500 and what's left of my GPZ550 after 8 cart wheels in a corn field.

My brother and I were very lucky to get a matching pair of 1971 Honda 70’s.  And even more lucky to have a dad that put them up in the attic when we out grew them....   thanks dad, we took them out a few years back and got them running again which all it took was cleaning the carbs and getting rid of all the old gas and cleaning the points. I can’t tell you how much fun they still are... we use them every year now when our town has its “defeat of Jessy James days” to get around.

Nice!

4 speed models too!

I’ve bought and sold a dozen or so of them years ago, back when they were cheap.  They are a hot ticket these days, I still have a 1970 3speed model.  I’ll never sell it.

Hmmmm.

Depends what you want to use it for??  If you just want to run around the neighborhood it’ll work fine, up until about 45 mph.  Then the vibration gets to be a bit much, and the engine strains at any higher sustained speed.  Even the 350/360 series of 2 cylinder machines strain above 55; they will do about 75-80 but they are simply not made for that highway speed. The 350 Four or CB500/550 Four will both do 75mph all day long and as smooth as silk.  Of course the CB750 is the King, the earlier the year the more in demand and higher value.

And then if you want to teach kids to ride, a CT70 is the way to go.  The 3speed centrifugal clutch models are easy for anyone to learn on.  And they will take you and a kid straight up a steep incline and runs at 30mph comfortably.  I love those little machines, and so do others ($1500-2500 for decent ones).

Thanks for the compliment. I started restoring and collecting over 20 years ago when our son left the nest.....all the trips to ball practice, games, and other events teenagers keep us busy with were gone. I missed my fishing partner, so I resorted to my favorite activity before starting my family-motorcycle riding and building. One turned into two, then 30, then just one more, and again. Gordon

Interesting read Gordon ..
Awesome collection of some very cool bikes !
I've rode some of the bikes you have, and still also remember the torque of the Yamaha 650 twin, which at the time was the largest bike I had ever ridden.
My favorite was the Yamaha 350's .. Owned a R5, RD350 & a RZ350.

Oh yea, I love the 650 Yamaha Twins, had 3 of them. The R5C is a 1972 3,100 mile original paint bike. The 1985 GPZ750E Turbo is the most remarkable bike I've ever restored/owned - not the fastest for sure, but remarkable. As docile and easy to ride as 500 Four below 5,000 rpm and 50 mpg - then a raging monster of 120 horses at 14 lbs boost when over 5,000 rpm and throttle opened. PeeWee Gleason turned a 10 second quarter at the end of 11 runs and said then that he never launched it perfectly - Too much throttle and the tire would blister, too little and it would bog. Loved that bike and regret selling one of the very few left of the 2,200 made.

WOW, just WOW!

I had a Kawasaki H1 back in the early 70’s; I definitely do not need to ride that machine again. For those not familiar, it is a first generation crotch rocket, with all the handling characteristics of a freight train. 😀

Gordon, you have serious skills.

David, the Red/White Striped 1970 MACH III (H1) you see in the lower right of the group photo above is one of short swingarm models (1969 ~ 1972) and wheelies would happen anytime you opened the throttle in 1st or 2nd and 5,000 rpm was anywhere close by. I've owned/restored 3 of the H1's and 5 of the H2's (MACH IV/750's). The 1969 MACH III/500's was the fastest production machine you could buy - bike or car. 110 mph and 12.1 second quarter right out of the box.

One of the 3 H2's I bought in a bundle was beat up and the engine case was cracked and not usable. I decided I wanted a Drag Bike, so I built an extended swingarm 3" over and sent the replacement engine to a shop in New York for a Stage 3 build....163 horsepower at the crank at 9,000 rpm. It's the Green 1974 H2B shown here. Careful what you wish for.......while it made stupid power at 9,000 rpm that would just shread the back tire, it would not pull slack out of your pants at 6,000 or even 7,000 rpm. Having a piston ported drag engine that I wanted to ride on the street was one of my worst mistakes I ever made in restoring. Gordon

I have had a few vehicles of note over the years, Laurie's dad "Earl" had a hand in all of them, and painted all of them with exception of the "Flame Ranger"

in the early 80' with Earl's help i put together a 72 comet, i dropped a 302/4 speed in it, it was fun and fast.

In 2000 something i had an 87 ranger that Earl had fixed up the body and panted after i cast it aside. shortly after the 2.3 died a horrible death and i fit a 5.0 HO/T5 5 speed in it, it was from an 89 mustang with mass air and an A9L ECU. eventually a 8.8 373 posi from an explorer ended up under it. this truck was also fast and fun to drive, ran it as my daily driver for many years. rust took its toll on that one as well, i did start restoring it (bought an 89 for the chassis) and Earl had found a rust free body. that one has been sitting in the driveway for several years as i have been more focused on boat projects lately.

and the 99 ranger (flame ranger) that will hit the road shortly, Earl picked it up originally for me to drop the 5.0 from the orig V8 ranger in it, but plans changed, it got a 4.0 DOHC and a really sweet paint job thanks to Shawn.

of any of them this project was by far my favorite, A 1970 GMC 4WD pickup
one day in the mid 80's when we went up to "the farm" (Laurie's mom and dads place) this truck was sitting in the yard.
Earl had bought it to fix up, i some how convinced him that i needed to have it, and with his help we restored it. the last pix is what it looked like the day i got it out of the shop.
it went through many changes over the years, i ran it hard off road and eventually it went from 1/2 ton axles (dana 30/12 bolt) to 3/4 ton (dana44/14bolt) with welded on trusses. and from a 4 speed GL to a turbo 400 tranny. had a mild 350 that had many different carbs over the years but ended up with a Holley projection that worked best for hill climbing.
i ran it hard for about 15 years before the rust took its toll (it was a daily driver). it still sits in the feild up at the farm cuz i cant bear to actually part with it.

Looking at Gordon's great collection, Back in 1980 after I had moved to Daytona Fla for collage. I started road racing bikes. Your Water Buffalo brings up fond memories of the first motorcycle I repeatedly ran over 160mph. Yes it was modified and it was one damn strong machine.
Guess I should get some of my stuff on here in particular my 1975 Ducati 750 Sport. I have an assortment of mid '60s to early 80s Suzuki's as well.

The R5 was my first street bike, great little bike until my brother crashed it.
Got a RD350 that had been crashed and fixed it up. Didn't look perfect but ran great.
Two of my Buddy's had the yellow Kenny Robert's RZ's so I got the red and white version with rear seat cowl, looked pretty racy back then, before all the full fairing bikes.
Got a set of "All Speed" expansion chamber's and spent days getting the jetting right, but was worth the effort .. I could beat most 750 bikes. It had the "YPVS" exhaust valve so porting wasn't a option, at least back then.
Also added SS breaded front brake lines, fancy brake pads and some sticky Metzeler tires for better stoppie's .. LOL
Not the best handling bike .. But motor was crazy fun !
The one bike I should have never sold .. Still regret selling it ..

Not my picture, but looks the same ..

Had the 2017 Honda Accord Coupe three years now (17,200 miles). Not a believer in customizing, but improving. Modifications include a bigger, round shaped gear shifter from another Honda model, magnetic oil drain plug, smoother shifting manual transmission oil, and Honda factory splash guards front and back.

Here's what my Dad had in the 60s-I really liked it ( of course I was pretty small then and the back seat seemed spacious ) Dad traded it in for a Mercedes-go figure

Very cool BMW Isetta!
Love everything about that picture. The bike. The cars in the background. Man I really was born in the wrong time...

I was on the hunt for a car with a tow hitch when a friend told me he knew where one has been sitting for quite some time. I was actually looking for something all wheel drive but just couldn’t pass this one. It has been sitting in a garage since 1998 until I bought it 2 weeks ago. Old battery, old fuel. Attached a power bank and gave the carb something to drink and it fired up right the first try. Gotta love the good old American engineering. Engine has been beefed up quite a bit as this thing pulls hard for a SBC.
Paint looks like someone did it in their backyard but it’s alright for a daily. Will get a new, the original, paint job this winter. It used to be Chevy brown gold... So a great match for the Timmi. Will post pics when it’s done.

It’s not to many toys.. it’s how many pistons you have... that’s the friendly competition I have with a couple of my buddy’s..     right now I’m winning with 43.. :)
