Title: ! Trailer wheel fell off on I-90 !
Post by: Villager19 on August 22, 2021, 07:08:38 PM
Well after an amazing meet-up in Red Wing, my trailer wheel fell off while I was driving home this afternoon! The passenger-side wheel fell off just outside the Wisconsin Dells, while I was going about 65mph.

What would cause the wheel to come off like this? I could be wrong, but I think this trailer is totaled. The boat has some minor damage. I just bought some heavy-duty tie-downs straps for this trip and thank goodness they kept the boat on the trailer.

I was able to arrange a flatbed tow and when I last saw my boat, it was on the flatbed tow truck, on its trailer, as pictured. So I could use a little help with getting this boat home.

The tow truck driver is going to remove it from the flatbed tomorrow. Obviously the trailer cannot move backwards. They dragged it up onto the flatbed, ouch. I asked the tow truck driver what his plan is, and he is going to use a strap and lift it with a forklift, and try to lift it down by attaching the strap it to the tie-off points on the stern. Is it OK to lift the boat in such a manner?

Does anybody know of a trailer for sale for that would fit a CVX-18? I don't mind buying brand new. Reminder I'm in northern Illinois and the boat is up in the Wisconsin Dells. I don't mind driving a bit. I need something safe to get the boat back home.

Any idea how to get it on a new trailer once I find one??

Help, please and thank you!!

Sorry to here that hope your boat is ok.

Must be the year for axel trouble.  2 yrs ago it was Cv16 hull cracks.

Maybe ...
Find a local (Wis. Dells) boat dealer, they should have a fork lift for unloading large outboard motors from trucks.
They could drag boat off flat bed and put on new trailer.

A Glastron trailer for a CVX18 has a load cap. of 2700 lbs.
You might want to switch to bunk, better hull support ...
Guessing a new one would be in the $3500 range.

That is really sad. At least the boat looks ok. Switch to a bunk trailer. Better in every way. You could look for something used but you are short on time. Might be worth pricing out a new trailer.

Dealers don't have any boats to sell .. so might cut you a good deal.
Or call around .. dealer might have some used ones.

I know you probably don’t have much equipment with you, but some timbers and a jack would probably work to get the boat lifted up and you could possibly bolt that crossmember back on. Not sure if you were able to retrieve the hub or what it looks like but I think that spindle could be salvaged looks like the outer bearing failed.

Joe - got your PM! Thanks!!

The boat looks OK, but I will need to get it checked out. Hopefully it can be removed from the flatbed safely today.

I will look at a bunk trailer for sure, maybe even one with dual axles.

More to follow, hopefully only good news.

Have a great Monday, everyone!

Sorry to hear about your situation, it appears the outer bearing failed as Joe stated, but when it came off it appears it took out spring mount as well.   One suggestion would be to find a tandem axle utility trailer, there are plenty around, and just have the whole rig set on there.   I use a car lift with 4" straps to pull boats on and off trailers, maybe the tow company can offer some assistance swapping.  I would echo the groups call to switch to bunks, you obviously did a great job strapping it down, it would have been uglier if it came off.

I messaged a contact in the dells, asked if he knew of anything new or used that will fit the CVX18. A buddy of his has a 20 foot trailer,  roller, and im guessing something you won't be interested in.  He also mentioned you could have your boat dropped off at his farm for a couple weeks to figure out if yours it repairable. I can pass along his info if your interested.  You could probably pay him to get your trailer road worthy. Message me if you want guys contact info.

I’d avoid a tandem trailer with a cvx18. You don’t need the extra axle. Just makes maintenance more expensive. And trying move a tandem trailer around by hand is a pain. Forget about trying to turn it!

Thanks everybody for the feedback. I was tied up at work and not online earlier today.

The garage picked up the boat with a crane and they are supposed to have the trailer repaired tomorrow, so at least I can get it home. I might just buy a brand new bunk trailer this winter.

From what I saw (in the heat of the moment) there was only minor cosmetic damage to the fiberglass. I am a little concerned about the drivetrain alignment etc since the poor old Alpha One took the weight of the boat on the crossmember.

Plugcheck: thanks for the comments on strapping the boat down. Believe it or not, my old tie-down straps were getting old, and I replaced them the night before going up to the Red Wing meet-up. So the stern tie-downs were solid 2" straps and probably saved the boat. I'm thankful it did not turn out worse!

I had a bunch of tools with me but no jack. Next time I might even bring some bolts and brackets. Unbelievable!!

The bearings were replaced about a year ago so this is a bit of a surprise.

Still_fishin I will know more as the week goes on, and I may take you up on the offer.

Thanks everybody!! You are all fantastic!

Well, I am sad to say that the insurance company is going to call this a total loss.

The trailer has been repaired and I'll be buying back the boat and trailer from the insurance company as salvage. I'll be bringing it back home to Illinois soon.

I really appreciate all of the quick responses and the PMs - thank you so much!!

Once I get it home and get a chance to think things through, I'll decide whether to try and fix it or sell it.

If I end up putting it up for sale, I'll list it here first. For any of you who saw it over the weekend, you know its a super nice boat. It might just need a new owner who can DIY more than I can! Like I said, I'll give it some thought and post an update within the next couple of weeks.

Hey everybody!

Sorry for the delayed reply, but here is the update...

I found a shop to do the fiberglass work, and they are going to start working on it soon. It doesn't look like there is any damage to the metal flake areas, thankfully.

They said they would try to get as close as possible to the beige when they do the repair work. Does anybody have a color code or some other reference that I could point them to so that we could get the right color?

Thanks in advance!
