What to do
« on: January 27, 2012, 07:55:48 AM »
Any suggestion on what to do? I was looking at the 66 wondering if i should pull the motor and strip it down and have the block looked at or should i try to find a 4 cylinder cheap to throw in. Last but not least SELL the boat and look for something different? I don't want it to sit on the trailer this year and unfortanly my budget it somewhat tight.

Thanks Gents

If it were mine I would be in search of a donor boat. But I would make sure to water test the boat before buying.

Will a V8 fit under your engine cover?  I'll be pulling and selling the fully dressed 228 MerCruiser motor & complete drive assembly out of my CVX18 hopefully this spring. Everything worked last fall, that would wake up your '66! ;D.....LOL

Hey Kip how much would you be willing to sell the setup for? I wonder if my boat could handle weight or not

Kip - Don't you have a 305 under the hood?  Didn't you just get the 228/Alpha 1 setup?

Yeah, wait, I was thinking of my 898, being the only 305, forgot the 228 is the 305 too, the 260 being the 350.

Shoehorn that sucker in Tom!

Doran - I bought a '92 salvage boat at an auction this fall with a 5.7 and a Gen 2 Alpha drive. Jeff blessed it, so I figured it was OK to buy it! ;D

Tom -  I would think it could handle the weight but not positive. I'm sure you don't want to cut up your boat either to make it fit. We could look into the weight & size issues this spring and see if it's something you think you might want to do. No rush. I think I could give you a pretty good deal for everything. And of course we could do a water test so you can see for yourself that the motor and drive are solid. Just call me whenever and we can talk price - I'm in the CGOAMN phone book.

Personally, I'd go with the inline six again and an updated outdrive like Rich's set up. That way you wouldnt have to make a bunch of mods, cutting the boat up and it would be more original. Not that I am stricky about "original" but there are not many like yours around. Besides, since Rich has done it, he knows what needs to be done and would be a great advisor. It would be cool with a v8 though! Just my opinion.

I think it would be hard to shoe-horn a V8 in there. It would have to have the old style rear elbow exhaust manifolds. I don't think the newer center-rise manifolds will fit under the engine cover. Plus, you'd have to make up new engine mounts attached to the stringers in the engine box. The only mods I had to make were for the hole in the transom to fit the newer Alpha transom assembly and to relocate the front engine mount plank 6 inches forward to fit a longer engine. My original engine was a 120 so it was pretty small. Changes in steering cable, engine wire harness and tilt & trim system also had to be made to go with the newer engine but that's about it. I kept the original gauges in the panel except for the ammeter, I swapped that out for a volt meter.

Here are the two motors at the shop.  Neither one shows any external cracking.  If you are interested in them you can have them for free, you pick up.  We will be at the shop today until 2pm.  Call shop it need other arrangements.   763 972-6613
