Reverse Lock-Out Switch Leak
« on: February 01, 2012, 05:00:20 PM »
So...one (of a few) issues remaining on Goldie mechanically speaking, is the reverse lock-out switch is leaking.

Since it was 60 again today, I removed it and opened it up to see what the problem could be.  I've been chatting with Rich on it, but since a lot of us never open this up, I thought I'd post pictures.

I don't really get why there's a bent washer at the bottom...but it looks like its supposed to be there.  I think the fix is to just get a new o-ring.

The bent washer is called a "spring washer", used to apply some tension or friction force. What's the little plunger looking thingie sitting in the unit in the last pic? Aside from the main O-ring sealing the unit is there another for the rotating shaft where it goes through the cap?

Ok...that plunger...if you look at the rotating cap on the underside of the top piece...it has a notch in it that allows the fluid to push the plunger open letting the fluid push through...the rounded piece of that top cap (un-notched part) keeps that piece pressed closed.

So...I'm making the assumption that it acts as the check valve to keep fluid in the line and pressure on the drive rams to keep them solid when reversing...

But...that's only my assumption.

I'm going to take the rest of the top piece apart in a minute, as I think the fluid is leaking from the top as well.

How'd I do on my guess Rich?

Ok...got it figured out...here's it all disassembled:

The little plunger actually pushes on a spring or something that closes/opens the oil flow off.  This picture is blurry, but if you see down the hole there's a little metal plunger with a spring that it connects to.  I'm hoping I can get all the o-rings, seals, etc.

Since I haven't replaced my camera from the summer meet yet, this is all I've got...crappy cellphone camera pictures.

Here's how the little plunger works...realized this AM, that I never pictured the part that pushes & releases the fluid:

The notched/flat section allows fluid to flow or stops it depending on whether its touching the rounded portion or the flat portion.  I can see why they'd want to get rid of this part...there is a lot of moving parts, and seals for what's accomplished.

When I suddenly couldn't trim my motor up when trying to put it on the trailer in Red Wing Jason and I thought it was the solenoid which I replaced. It turned out to not help and Jason came over and found out it was my reverse lock out switch that was toast. We just bypassed it and I haven't had an issue since as I don't plan on trimming at all when in reverse.

You could just do that I suppose. Although that doesn't fully fix the issue, just ignores it!  ::)

I don't know Josh...that's something I could see needing!  Its gonna cost me about $3 in o-rings and seals...so its not really a big deal.  Plus...now I know how it works!

Good point! What with the cost being minimal and all. One of these years I'll have to find the time to tinker with mine some more. For now it's get it working as quickly and cheaply as possible! Maybe when my boys are teenagers in 10 years!

This looks like a little bit different of a deal then ours. You must have power steering Doran.
