Anybody know what this thing is? In 1 photo I am holding the prop from an alpha 1 drive next to it
? See anything else odd about it? Only clue, it came stock from the factory in this Glastron.

First gen of MerCruiser, I think they called it the MerCruiser 90. Only 4 nuts instead of 6 to hold the outdrive on, no tilt rams, looks like a Mercury outboard short shaft lower unit bolted on.

I know what that is. It's the Mercruiser 60/80/90 stern drive that's connected to a Renault 4 cylinder engine, used for only a few years from around 1966 to 1970 or '71. They were rated (I think) in 60, 80, & 90 horse power versions. The tilt mechanism opperated by pulling the drive up using the cable that's connected from the top of the drive up through the transom. They are as rare as hen's teeth. There's been one for sale on ebay for a while.

Rich/Steve, you are correct. This is a Renault 60, they did come in 80 & 90 as well. This one runs and functions and uses cable & pulley steering.

Odd! A cable to raise it. How was that held in place? Could it be locked at various heights for trimming?

No trim, tilt only. You set the trim position with a pin between the drive and transom shield.

Here is a picture of the cable tube/guide inside the boat......this one has an electric screw motor winding up the cable.....there is also a manuel crank and the one that Rich posted looks like it has been converted to a hydraulic cylinder.

Hey Retro, what's the unit attached to the top of the inner transom mount that has what look like 2 hydraulic hoses and an electric motor mounted horizontally? It's in both our pics.

Rich, The little arrow is pointing at the hydraulic shift unit...........your motor looks pretty original. Is yours missing the alternator too? It looks like in both pictures there are no belts???

I don't own the boat that I've pictured, they're just part of my collection of classic Glastrons in my library of pics. As far as an alternator goes I don't think they had one but instead had a stator charging system like that of an outboard engine or like my own 3.7 liter 4 cylinder in my boat. But, I've removed the stator charging system from my engine and added an alternator conversion kit. I haven't seen any of the Rentault engines with belts for alternator or water circulator, and up until now didn't even know where the crank pulley was. I'm still not sure.

Here are some pics of the later Renault, likely the 80/90 hp versions. Note the intake/exhaust and the distributor are on the opposite sides from the 60 hp version, and the exhaust pipe crosses over the rear of the engine. The engine is mounted entirely in the rear, nothing supporting it up front, and there's no exposed pulley or belts. They must have been fun to work on.

So these setups had hydraulic shift control? Where did they get the hydraulic pressure from? A pump mounted elsewhere in the engine bay? I'd be interested in knowing how that setup worked.

Ya it's a stator..........The 60's are twin carb and 80's & 90's are single carb (I think)

Here's one for ya ...
Have you seen the OMC equivalent to Mercury's small boat stern drive? This was also used in a few of the mid 60's Glastrons below 17 ft like this 1965 V164 Futura 500.
Their offering was I think 90-110 hp, and a V4 2 stroke design where they used an outboard power head turned on its face, housed inside the boat.
