Question
« on: February 08, 2012, 07:07:34 AM »
Does anyone know if my starter for my inline 6 will work on the 3.0 that i have? I found some starter on amazon for around 60 bucks and not sure if they would work. I hope the starter off the 6 will work thats been rebuilt. Also is the wiring harness are they all the same size i mean the plug. I want to use the complete  harness thats in my boat now for the 3.0?

Thanks Tom

Tom, the 230 CI 150 hp M/C used part number 50-32703 for a starter.....that number supercedes to 50-99417a2 which is the same as 3.0 s/n A???????  They should be exactly the same starter. (I think)

The engine harness is going to be different. When I swapped out my engine I changed out the harness from the instrument panel to the engine too, had to rewire the gauges. With the newer wiring the ammeter gauge became useless so I switched it out for a volt meter of the same style to match the other gauges. Your tach may also need to be changed to read properly because the vintage ones were made specifically for 4 or 6 cylinder engines.

All my gauges have been swithch out already with new ones. I am wondering if the wire harness on the 6 can be used looks like to me that everything on the 4 cyclinder is the same as my 6 cyclinder with the exception of the trim wires. All three motors have the same carb same fuel pump, coil wires and both sending units are the same.

Well, the alternator and starter should be the same. Maybe Rich is right but I don't see why the coil would care if it's firing a 4 or 6 cylinder. Distributer is only one wire. What's left? Maybe a temp sensor. Should be the same. I would think you can make it work Tom.

When I was looking into the carb on my boat even those were the same.

The harness plug at the engine has different pin assignments, which is the reason I went with a newer harness with my newer engine, the the plugs are not going to match up. I think it was around 1973 when they made the change. The wiring on the engines as far as ignition and such should be the same, but where you'll find a difference is with the alternator wiring - whether it's internally regulated or has the older external regulator. Also, the earlier pre-'73 engines had wiring provisions for the ammeter, later engines do not which prompted a change in the wiring harness. If you've already changed out the tachometer for a newer one then you should be able to just set it for 4 cylinder with a change of a set screw on the back of it. The tach reads number of pulses from the ignition coil so the 4 cylinder engine will have two less pulses per revolution which will give you a low reading on the gauge if you don't set it to compensate.

You should be able to get a new harness from Mercury but they're not cheap, maybe up to $200. I would check around for used ones from scrapped boats, maybe from where you got the engines from. How about the one from the yellow turd?

they pervious a**'s cut the harness all part so there is nothing. There is a wire harness on one of the motors i am concered if it would match the plug thats already in my boat the male end. pretty sure that would be a pain to rewire my whole boat for a new male plug to match the female plug for the 4 cyclinder.

What you might be able to try is swapping the wire harness that is on your 6 cylinder over to whichever 4 cylinder you'll be using, all the connection points on the engine should be the same. Then your harness plug will match. This way you don't have to change anything in the boat.

Don't you guys have a boat parts recycle place up there?  Any chance of finding the harness you need there?

This is EXACTLY what I would do. When you get to wiring, give me a call. These motors are very simple. We'll make it work.
