Title: Prop ideas
Post by: TomLund on September 18, 2018, 05:16:42 AM
Hey what is a good all round prop. We don’t ski we fish and like to cruise. I like fast. The boat is a 1994 17ft alumacraft with a Merc elhpto 75. Full tilt and trim. Wot is at 5000. Merc says I could push it to 5200. Also my reverse gear is chattering bad it backs up but won’t totally get into gear. Is it a cable adjustment or drain my bank account adjustment.

Thanks for any or all info

Tom

Personally, I'd say your prop is perfectly matched.  I don't see tremendous gains in that last 200 rpm except more engine wear and worse fuel economy.  Hard to say for certain that your tach is super laser accurate either.   Not to discourage you, most marine shops, or friends, will let you test props.  There are specialty shops that tweak props, but they are geared more to the lake Havasu 150mph type boats.  If speed is your goal, making more power helps.  A word of caution, be careful pushing the boat past it's design limitations.

That’s a good point. With it being a 75 hourse 2 stroke it is what it is. Thank you for the insight on props it been a while since I dealt with prop and pitch stuff.

Forgot to mention your reverse gear selection.  I would check the cable and/or controls first.  It's possible the dogs are worn, but that becomes a more expensive venture. Usually it's the forward dogs I see worn more.   When I'm making adjustments like this, I leave the boat on the trailer in the water, then I don't worry about running into dock or other issues.  I used to just hook to hose, but that doesn't put any load on the prop/gears.

I get it now. From what I read that’s the best match for
My boat. I wonder if a vengeance or something like that would give me a little more mph.

Your boat have side steering, live wells, rod storage, etc. ?
Carpet covered plywood floor and all the fancy stuff ?
Might be pretty heavy boat for a 75 HP motor.
How fast is it with the 19P ?

Boat is rated for motor up to 115. With Linda and I and gear  we are at 32-33 mph.
