According to Mr. Sellner, a leak down test is more important than compression. But you need a fancy tester for this.

You can pick up a compression test kit as well as a leak down tester for under $100 at Harbor Freight tools. I gave my family a list of tools I needed (wanted) for my workshop and I brought them to the guy who did the work on my old 115. He used it side-by-side with his expensive Snap-On sets and it was dead accurate.  Both come in a nice hard case for safe storage. Picked up a spark tester as well. Already used it to rule out a couple of motors I was interested in purchasing.
