Kill switch...
« on: February 20, 2012, 03:00:28 PM »
Anyone have any recommendations?  I see 2 main types...the SeaDog Universal Red button popper...or the T-H Marine I/O Kill Switch.

My '96 Glastron had the T-H Marine I/O style...and real differences?  I'd prefer to locate it by the shifter mount, rather than up by the ignition switch.

I'd think you can use either depending on what you're using it on. Of the ones I've seen which were "universal" they had electrical contacts to be used for either outboard or I/O engines, one style works backwards from the other.

To use on an I/O you use the contacts that maintain connection in the switch while the safety clip is installed and it is connected inline with the ignition power wire from the keyswitch to the ignition coil. If the clip is pulled the connection is broken and the engine dies.

To use on an outboard you use the contacts that remain open (no connection) while the safety clip is installed and you connect with a jumper from the black/yellow magneto wire going to the keyswitch on one side of your kill switch and a jumper wire to ground on the other. When the clip is pulled the ignition magneto is shunted to ground killing the engine.

You know...I was just looking for controls as well.  I might be better picking up a new control set that has the kill switch integrated in it...my neutral safety is fried the way it is, and the Mercuiser 4000 series controls can be had fairly reasonably.

Assuming that will work with my older drive?

Have to be careful here. Any of the new control units marked as Gen II require different cables for shift and throttle. Your existing control cables may not connect inside the control box. Other than that it would operate the same as the older control.

Yeah, that should work. Looks 1980's style, has trim and trailer button in the handle but no safety kill switch. Pretty much anything will work up to when they discontinued the older 3000 series controls in favor of the new 4000 series Gen II controls.

That's so funny ... I was just looking at Mercury controls on eBay thinking the same thing .... if I just buy new controls, they'll come with the safety in it - and the trim/tilt button on the handle.

That will probably be my method of attack when I get there.  New controls aren't necessary at this time, just a wish.
