1975 v179 wiring SAVE ME!!! PLZ!!!
« on: May 18, 2016, 12:45:11 AM »
Hello, I am new to the forum and happy to say that I am the new owner of a 1975 v179 starflight... the engine is sound and the floor is being fixed... the only issue I have is the dash has been smashed and the wiring is a basket case of a rats nest... if anyone has a wiring diagram that would save me... any help would be appreciated

Welcome to the group. I feel your pain on the smashed dash and wiring mess. My 75 V179 was missing the dash and glove box when I purchased it and the wiring behind the dash was a mess.

Just curious what engine your 179 is sporting? if it is a Mercruiser I should have a diagram I can scan. I also have pictures of the wiring after I rebuilt and installed a used dash.

Oh, do you have any pictures? we love pictures no matter the condition.

Oh, this was my replacement dash when I got it

Wiring can be trouble for most, but have patience.  If you separate the systems it's not that bad.  Take some time and take notes of what wire color/size goes where.  Remember that the main harness may have 25 wires in it, but each one usually breaks down to individual circuits.  One ignition, stern light, oil pressure sensor, a few for trim pump, a main power feed, etc....again, take time, make your own drawings, compare factory schematic, mark wires with masking tape and pen.  In short order you will have it figured out.  Good luck.

well the biggest issue is that the previous owner removed components... without marking wires or putting it back... so I have a bunch of random wires with no homes

If the wires in question are from the stock loom/harness, then you should be able to match them with the schematic from the FSM.   If all the wires are all white, or PO added custom wiring,  then an ohmmeter with alligator clips, long leads, and a friend are your next option for determining what wire connects to what.  Some folks use a test light, which I'm OK with, but you have to fuse the power input, a dead short on something can cause you more headaches than its worth.   It may be daunting, but take it slowly, the knot will unravel.   Boats do not have terribly difficult wiring compared with modern cars, and I believe it is a job most DIY's can do.

To add pictures to your post ...

Click on " Attachments and other options "
Then ...
Click the "Browse" button and direct it to where on your computer you store your pictures.

Some pictures taken with cell phones are very very large and can time out on the up load to your post.
You can do links to your One drive or Photobucket.
