Title: Boating September 10th or 11th
Post by: Jason on August 29, 2011, 09:15:33 PM
I am open to either day and just about any location. Should be nice cooler temps, less boats, and great times wherever we go.

OPTIONS:
-Minnesota river Fort Snelling to Valley Fair
-Mississippi 494 in St. Paul Park north through the locks and Mpls.
-St. Croix
-Mississippi 494 in st. paul park south to hastings
-Mississippi Prescott to Treasure Island
-White Bear Lake
-Minnetonka
-?

Now is the time to make up for lost time on the water. Of the places Jason listed, my favorates are Minnesota River, St. Croix, and St. Paul Park to Hastings.

The wooden boat show is being held on Lake Minnetonka on the 10th, maybe that would be a good time for a bunch of old Glastrons to show up......

Brian talked about how much he likes the Minnesota river. I'm game for trying that. Sunday is the better day for us, but can make Saturday work as well, say after 10:30 or 11am.

Who wants to coordinate this?  Jason?  Appears there are a number of people anxious to go boating. All we need to do is get everyone to agree on the details.

I don't have a problem being the ring leader on this one. I am just kind of waiting for input from anyone interested as to go with the option that is going to bring in the most boats.

As far as the day goes it will also depend on weather and we'll just have to see as we get closer.

I like the boat show idea on Minnetonka. You gonna be available Tom?

Yes I will be available because I plan on being at the boat show anyway, I am trying like mad to finish my grandsons boat so I can enter it in the show this year.

I would certainly like to go. Just depends on where. The Minnesota river was nice with low traffic but not much in the line of places to beach.
I've never been on the Mississippi thru St. Paul.
Minnetonka is cool but its a haul for me but sooner or later I'm going to get there again. Its been years.
Also something to keep in mind for the destination is...if we want to go later when the leaves are changing. Might as well make them 2 different destinations?

This is definitely not the last trip of the year....at least not for me. Sounds like there is also a fall color trip on the St. Croix to be defined.

Anyone want to drive up to Ottertail this weekend?  Got a 10 mile long lake full of water begging to be cut up!  I am here till the 12th it looks like.  Great ski lake and some darn good fishing.  There is a great pizza place with dock space for about 30 boats!

I think we should plan for Saturday the 10th on Lake Minnetonka. Would be cool to see all the old Wood boats too.

Jim can you post where that good boat ramp is on Minnetonka that you usually use? Any preferences on time? I am thinking 9AM to get a good parking spot at the ramp.

It's worth the drive Ross!!

I know! I was already pissed that my buddy selfishly planned his weddding that day  :P

Wings and Wheels is awesome - it's a big show but not even close to overwhelming like Back to the 50's, and there's usually something for everyone (example being the Delorean club that always shows up). The wooden boat show sounds pretty cool though... ???

Post by: Rosscoe on September 02, 2011, 08:40:35 AM
Geez, this is just about 5 miles away and I've never been there...and on the same weekend!
I'll likely bite the bullet on the drive to Minnetonka as long as I can get on and off the water without a lot of headaches like I've had when I've been there before. (crowded ramps) I'd certain prefer not to drive to the west side of the lake to put in too, if possible. Good directions would help a lot.

I don't know for sure, never been to this event before.
It depends how many woodies are at Maynards.
The Bayside is right next door, we can dock there if we order something from them.

They usually keep slips on the west docks open for restaurant traffic. The other Maynards docks will be closed for the boat show. During the lunch rush it might be tough to park a bunch of boats.

Hey Jim, is this in Wayzata or? The link to the map is giving me about 5 options for "north shore drive"
When I pick the Mound option, it looks like it goes to a dead end in someones yard. ???..and not on Maxwell bay.
Could you or someone privide me driving directions from 494? Exit Hwy 12 etc?
Now I think I see two marinas on Maxwll bay right next to each other. One of those?

I used to drive out to the Wayzata Yacht Club so I am somewhat fimilar with that area but its been 18 years.

to hwy 12 West
to 15 west (shoreline Dr)
turn right onto 51 (North Shore Dr)
turn right onto 135 (Tonkawa Rd)
Ramp will be immediateally on your right.

FYI (I am bringing the V172) I should be the slowest in the group  :P

See you guys at 9AM Weather looks great! SUNNY, 82, NO WIND!

Oh, you'll see it. it's public ramp. you will need to turn right onto Tonkawa road to get into the parking lot though. I'll edit my first response.

Be sure to go the second Co Rd 15 (west).
After a 2 miles of straight road thru the swamp, you'll start seeing the lake on your left.
Co Rd 51 (North Shore Blvd) will be a right turn, past a couple marinas to the ramp on the corner of 51 & 135 (Tonkawa Blvd)
It's considered Wayzata but is really Orono.
I'll PM my cell phone, Call me if you get lost

It was nice to see you guys at the Boat Show. I hope you enjoyed the boats, it was a good show this year. There were good crowds all the way to the end at 4:00.

"Victory" the 1939 19' Chris Craft won best of show inboard. The 1930 26' Chris triple with the A-120 engine won Judge's choice.

Love those wooden boats. Unbelieveable craftsmenship! Tons of mahogany.
Awesome weather and people too.... what else could you ask for?
I'll post some pics now and more tomorrow.
Dane, do you have any pics of the winning boats? Sure would be hard to choose.

Wood boat show was really cool! Lots of beautiful boats.

More pics
This first one was so long, I couldnt get it all in. 34 ft? 37 ft? Cockpit in the front, then a cabin, then another helm, table and chairs and back behind that a large booth, then the motors. I wish I had gone to another dock to get one of the whole thing. Maybe Tom did? I think it was his favorite.

Thanks all,
Definitely a great day.  I arrived just as the group was about to leave the dock.  I had a cooler with ice but otherwise empty.  I drove hard (2 hours) to get there and never made it to a gas station for refreshments.
Jim was definitely a great host, one call and a relative delivered coffee and sodas.  We had breakfast at the wooden boat show, lunch at a large outdoor church bazaar/carnival, and supper at a restaurant with a beautiful outdoor patio (the adult scenery) OH YA.  It was a full day of never ending fun!
Jason gave club cards to two Glastron owners found during the day?s adventure.
That was definitely the best day of the summer!!!
Hopefully the fall will allow for a few last minute outings for the club.

My first thought was who had the CVX18, I thought maybe Ross's buddy showed up. But then I realized that boat is a CVX20 jet.

You guys had awesome weather on Minnetonka yesterday. I'll be out next weekend with my 2 oldest boys doing an overnight on the SeaRay. I don't think we'll be as lucky weatherwise.

Here are some of the award winners

Best outboard went to this Partee, owned by the same family since new. 4 generations were at the show and they were very excited winners.

Best inboard boat went to the 1939 19 foot Chris Craft "Victory"

Judge's Choice went to the 1930 26 foot Chris with the convertible top and the A-120 engine (Alum V8 built by Chris Craft 824 Cubic inches)

Most Original went to this 1929 24' Chris. This was a boat house find with original everything.

Ross,

The long boat is "Posh" a 1937 54 foot commuter. This is a Hacker design built by the Huskins shipyard. They built three special commuters. Tempo was at the Minneapolis Boat Show last January, Posh, and the third boat is the Thunderbird on Tahoe.

I used to live in Tahoe and worked at the Tahoe city Marina where it was kept and got to know it pretty well. With twin P-51's it's quite de-tuned just to keep it under control. Only two where made and it's "sister" is at the bottom of the lake over by Incline Village and the east shore.

Judge's Choice went to the 1930 26 foot Chris with the convertible top and the A-120 engine (Alum V8 built by Chris Craft 824 Cubic inches)

824 CI and aluminum! Fantastic!

Ross,

The long boat is "Posh" a 1937 54 foot commuter. This is a Hacker design built by the Huskins shipyard. They built three special commuters. Tempo was at the Minneapolis Boat Show last January, Posh, and the third boat is the Thunderbird on Tahoe.
You know alot about these things Dane.
That is one incredible boat if you can call it that!  :o Great shot. I'll be keeping that one.
