Title: Mating season
Post by: Hotwired on August 09, 2010, 12:21:35 PM
Mating season ... anyone tried to mate a OMC engine to a Mercruiser drive?  Does anyone know what a Glastron 155 V8 is displacement and block? Must be smaller than a 302 ford or 305 Chevy.

What are you up to...

As much as I need another project .. I am considering one. I found a basket case CV-16V8 .... and a Mercruiser 898 engine and drive. I am wondering 'bout converting it from OMC to a Mercruiser drive system.

I heard that SEI makes an adapter for OMC outdrives.

I would be mainly looking to gain the trim that Mercruiser offered at the time. but a newer generation Volvo Penta engine and drive would be a consideration too.

They made a CV16 V8 with an OMC Stringer drive? I thought back then it was either MerCruiser or Volvo.  Big job to do that due to the larger cut-out in the transom for the OMC. If the blocks are the same all the Mercruiser stuff could be unbolted off the Merc engine and right back on to the OMC.

The boat I am looking at is a 76 CV-16ssV8 and the brochure I have list i's power as a Glastron 155 V8. Complete wood replacement needed it looks like and it is already in pieces.

Chris - I'm gonna guess that's the Volvo drive w/302 Ford engine and Glastron's name on it. Just a guess.

It is a 302 block. Glastron was using volvo outdrives and had their own engine line for the 302 and 351 engines. The CV-16 V8 was detuned to 155hp.

So .. .do you think a Mercruiser 888 drive would bolt up to a Glastron 155??? And is just the bell housing different between the 898 and 888? I have yet to find a 888 but have a local 898 complete package here in Phoenix.  Assuming a Glastron 155 was a 155hp setup, a 200 HP 898 package should be a bit of a performance upgrade... wonder how a 260 package would fit in there? ... getting way ahead of myself already but ..... a 260 HP CV-16ssV8 .... would be a interesting boat.

Chris I not sure but I believe that the ford motors are a 60degree motor and the gm are 90 degree.  Which make the gm blocks wider than the fords. But iam with you on that a cv 16 with a 260hp+  would be a neat project. Good luck see you at the meet Jeff

You guys continue to blow me away with your knowledge of what bolts to what and what was offered etc. Amazing to me!
CV16 V8 would definitely be cool Chris.
Why dont you just make it a jet?
Maybe you've had your fill with thru the hull exhaust and want something quiet.

LOL ... am considering through hull actually if it will fit!  Jet was a fleeting choice too ... but I think it might move the engine further forward that the engine cover would allow.

Thats true, they do come further forward. You have to back into the jump seats in my Crestflite its so narrow, and I am not a very big person! Maybe a tall guy like youself could rotate after you get back there.  :D

The 77 CVX 18  were Ford powered with Mercruiser.  Don't know what the number on the outdrive is however!

My '77 Formula had a 351 in it. 233 Mercruiser designation. Bleve the 302 was rated at 188 hp?

Chris my Dad who used to be a Ford guy said the 302 and 351 were different blocks so I would think there would be big differences between the 888 and 898 MerCruiser drive systems. But I guess you can make anything fit/work if you really want to. Just look at Bob P's boat! ;D

My BIL had a Formula. Talk about a boat that's put together. Wow!

"Chris my Dad who used to be a Ford guy"

What happened...did he convert?  :D
Usually when a dad is a ford guy, so is the son, but I know you are not, Kip. Nor am I. When I was a kid, my dad (and us boys) hated fords. Last 3 vehicles my dad had...Fords, all Areostars. The first one served him so well he bought another. That one life ended thanks to a deer.
Vehicles are so different now they what they were and "mated, cross bread, not sure it matters much anymore. Its more about whether you like they way they look or not.
OK off topic.  :P

Funny, my Dad had 2 Aerostars...ran forever.

Ross - I've always gravitated towards GM vehicles. I've owned a Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Chevrolet & GMC. And a Toyota PU.

My dad likes those Dodge Minivans now. His dad used to own a Ford garage/dealership so he drove them for most of his life. Bought a new '65 Ford Mustang coupe w/289 4sp, factory 4barrel and dual exhaust. 8) Also had a '65 Mustang convertable that he restored and then sold after he bought his new '75 Ford van. Can you believe he sold that and kept his '68 Ford XL ??? Dad what were you thinking???...LOL

Yeah back on topic, Chris when are you going to post pictures of that boat you bought? Another question is were all of the CV16 V8's the built with the Volvo/Glastron power packages ? I think they were.

CV16V8 only came with 155HP Glastron(Ford) 302 and Volvo outdrive.

I will not be picking it up till I get back from the MN meet.  I  have talked to him a few times and was originally going to only buy the boat from him as he wanted to keep the engine and trailer. I did not really mind not having the engine as I wanted to repower it with a Mercruiser anyhow.  After looking around for a week I came to realize I was not going to be able to get another worth while trailer for  even what he is asking for the entire package I have now told him I want to take the whole package.  Boat, engine, drive and trailer.  I was primarily interested in the hull because it is a V8 hull with the engine cover intact.  But now I think I may be able to use the same 302 engine with a Mercruiser 888 engine and drive package which will have the trim/tilt that I want. The boat is disassembled due to needing a floor replacement. I suspect it will need a transom and stringers too but have not even layed eyes on it yet let alone probed the stringers or transom.  It's a project.  But it is a CV-16ssV8!

Chris, Three words. "Chevrolet Crate Motor."  Big horsepower right from the factory.

I like the color! My understanding is that those Volvo drives don't trim which is major bummer from a performance standpoint. So putting a MerCruiser drive in it would make a lot of sense. Plan on redoing the transom as the cut-out looks bigger than what a MerCruiser drive would use.

Or you can get one of these adapter plates and easily convert over to a Mercruiser:

Chris
As nice as it would be, its sounds like a fairly big project. You have room and time to work on that baby? It would be cool to have a 16/v8 for sure. OK yup, thats a good enough reason right there. Never mind..... :o

Room and time ... no and no but that never stopped me before!
